US special envoy to Sudan hails voter registration process

November 22, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The US special envoy to Sudan retired General Scott Gration toured various areas in Darfur and Abyei with focus on voter registration centers ahead of the general elections starting in April 2010.

At a press conference in the Khartoum state ministry of Culture, Youth and sports, Gration said that he is “pleased to see that Sudan is entering into the registration period that things are proceeding, and we look forward to a good election in April”.

Yesterday the Sudanese National Elections Commission (NEC) announced an extension to the voter registration process which was scheduled to end in November 30th and also pushed forward the elections to April 11th 2010 instead of April 5th 2010.

“I went to registration centers here in Khartoum, in Abyei and in Darfur. And I would encourage people to register to vote. This is a responsibility that I take very seriously. In my country, I vote in every election that I get a chance to vote. I make my will known. It is part of the democratic process,” the US official told reporters.

In the last few weeks, opposition parties have called for extending the registration period and the NEC has promised to look into it. Some political powers also pointed fingers at the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) alleging widespread fraud in the registration process.

In Darfur, Gration also said he met with UNAMID officials in North Darfur capital city of El-Fasher as well as civil society representatives on security and stability issues as well as border skirmishes between Chad and Sudan.

He expressed appreciation to the efforts made by Khartoum to mend ties with its Eastern neighbor.

Era of communist is already gone. It does not work and it will never work in south Sudan. We have one way which is democracy way. With it we are going to have a peaceful state, peace nation, devolved State and all people of south are going to have good lives. If you believe in Communist way, then metal are produce in many countries in the world.

The US spceial envoy to sudan retired General Gration is trying to work closely in the implementation of the CPA with North, but he do not put strong pressure to the government of Khartoum. If the referendum laws up to now is not yet set,General Gration should be aware that the south sudan referendum will be declear in south sudan parliment, otherwise he should speed his envoyship in sudan. For registration for the voters is also very important, but the most important one is the referendum laws

Smart job Gration, you know we Sudanese especially the southerners seem to not take registration seriously, but that later will affect them greatly.

I myself can see in some areas there is no registration done at all and April is only 4 months away now. There was supposed to be mobile teams to reach the interiors, but i can see non.Shame on Southerners!!!!!!!!
