Misunderstanding of 2005 peace agreement

By Chol Deng Chol

November 24, 2009 — The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), is misunderstood by the politicians who lead the political parties such as: SANU, UDSF, United Democratic Party, SPLM-DC, Sudan National Labor Party, USAP-2, South Sudan Democratic Forum, South-Sudan Democratic Front.

The root causes of the civil war between the North and the South Sudan have been fuelled by the factors which include the disputes over the resources, power, ethnicities and the role of religions in the state, as well the self-determination. The nature and the size of the country have been frequently overflowed into communities’ conflicts that brought insecurity to the whole regions especially in Southern Sudan. A period of ten years from 1973 until 1983, relations have never been peaceful until the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Sudan (GOS) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in January 2005. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement CPA is the best reward for the SPLA struggle in 22 years, as well for the cause of the people of South Sudan.

Back to my point of view that, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) is misunderstood by some southern politicians. I know that we were all well informed by our late leader, Dr. John Garang de Mabior and the world community that the principles of Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) is to form the Government of National Unity (GNU), power sharing and the referendum in six years to determine the issue of secession of the South. But, not to overthrown the SPLM party before the election is not yet done or the decision is not yet made by the Freedom Fighters and the southern population at large.

Therefore, what the southerners are doing now there in South Sudan is a heartbreaking because every event has a counterreaction, and every time one party takes one step, the other feels it has to take another step, and the tension builds, and as the hostility builds too among the southerners themselves. The southerners are not moving toward and working together as amicably as they might. The growing problems on ethnics and intrastate conflicts are encouraging by those political parties which are supporting by the government in Khartoum. There are increasing interests in Sudan. The politicians want to undermine the peace deal, commonly termed (spoilers). For instance, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin slightly left the SPLM in mid-2009 because he was not doing well in his job as a Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Akol was accused of being too weak to govern Southern Sudan even though he had some of the money and 50% of power. He formed a new party which is now called SPLM-Democratic Change. Dr. Lam Akol is not a good politician since he joined the movement (SPLM) in 1986; and also is not the first time for him to form and change from the party to the other.

The members of SANU, UDSF, United Democratic Party, Sudan National Labor Party, USAP-2, South Sudan Democratic Forum, and South-Sudan Democratic Front, who nominated Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, as presidential candidate against SPLM candidate General Salva Kiir Mayardit for the position of the Government of Southern Sudan president in the upcoming election. These parties put Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin on a wild fire. A traveller must know where he will end up his journey, but, a Chemical Engineer Dr. Doesn`t. I think that it is the end of his political will whether he will win the election or not.

Why I mention that, because Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin is well known as a Fox, (people called him). Dr. Lam Akol cannot win the minds and the hearts of the southerners. Addition to that, Dr. Lam Akol is an agent of the Khartoum government; his power is base in North where he gets money from. The above reasons will let Dr. Lam Akol to loses an election to 1st Lt General Kiir Mayardit. If Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin wins the election, he will not be a president of South Sudan, because Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin cannot take a power from SPLA/SPLM since he broke away from the Government of the South Sudan (GOSS) and formed his own party SPLM-DC which is not supported by the southerners who scarified their lives to fight for a seeks of the freedom and equality in bush for 21 years. While Dr. Lam Akol supporters are the people who turn their backs to their relatives in the South during the struggling periods.

What do you think as a southerner, can SPLM over hand its powers to the Khartoum supporters! For me, No! We must fix our own problems as the southerners without the northerners manipulate into our own affairs. I don’t support the tribalism, but if the southerners need a leader from Shilluk tribe, Mr. Pagan Amum Okech and Mr. Oyai Deng Ajak are the good leaders. These two gentlemen from Shilluk tribe stand strong with SPLA from the beginning to the end, fighting for a freedom of the southerners all. But, the PhDs holders seem to be self centeredness or self-interested politicians of South Sudan. I think a “Chemical Engineer Dr. lost in Politics’ Angles”.

    Chol Deng Chol,

Your article is quite clear and straight forward for every patriotic southern Sudanese to understand.

If really the southern political parties are struggling for independent of southern Sudan, how blindly can they nominate NCP candidate for south Sudan presidency?

Please supporters of southern Sudan secession, this is the articule which carries no trick.

Reminder, lets vote for a southern leader who is capable of declaring unilateral independent of southern Sudan should the referendum of 2011 fails to achieve secession. As, the writer puts it,if ,you want a leader out side Kiir ,it must be from the SPLM and with strong military abilities and experience,in order to win loyalty and support of the strong army of southern Sudan-SPLA.

This is the only guaranteed for south Sudan to secede peacefully or violently.

Sudan is ruled by military man this requires a military leader in the south leadership.

my fellow country man,its good that u told us about Ur stays wit H.E Dr.Lam in Nasser.the S.Sudan is made up of multi- ethnic tribes where by every tribe is legible to rule.u ave no rights or what so ever to intimidate Dr.Lam coz he is not from Ur tribe by saying “Dr Lam’s days are numbered” who r u to numbered his days?the very person who misunderstood the 2005 CPA is kiir since he is not able to read and write, that’s the reasons as to why he feared to vie for the presidency of Sudan against Bashir since he automatically knows that he gonna fail and definitely go back to Gokrial or what ever u call his constituency.primitiveness and illiteracy is a disease that has no cure in S.Sudan, its like HIV/AIDS.and we need to wipe it out of S.Sudan, and by doing so,the transition we do cry for every day is coming very soon by removing Kiir from his so-called state house in juba my friends,we are counting your strides, you need to be careful because we are numbering your days tightly not loosely.
