Statement of the SPLM Chapter denouncing the arrest of the SG of the SPLM, his deputy and democratic protestors 08/12/2009

To:

H.E. Omar Al-Bashir, President of Sudan

H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, first-vice President of Sudan and President of the Government of Southern Sudan

H.E. Dr. Suliman Mohammed Mustafa, Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan, Paris-France

Dear Sirs,

Yesterday, the free world as well as peace lovers are shocked and most perturbed to witness the most blatant human rights violations under your leadership against peaceful demonstration and against the SPLM Secretary General Cde. Pagan Amum and his deputy Cde. Yasir Arman.
Yesterday’s brutality by the police and security agents constitutes not only a greater violation to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) but also to the Interim Constitution.

Mr. President, the CPA you and your party signed in 2005 to end the long suffering of marginalised-people in Sudan spelt out the right to hold a peaceful demonstration whereby Sudanese citizens can express their will anywhere in the country.

Giving the aforementioned facts, we the under signatories of this present letter are writing to strongly protest and denounce the arrests made yesterday against free democratic protesters. In addition, we wish to express our concerns and ask your Excellency to immediate order the release of the remaining protesters. Furthermore, we call upon your party the National Congress Party to respect the will and rights of all citizens to hold peaceful demonstration (s) whenever and wherever they wish.

Finally, we do strongly support the position taken by the First Vice President of Sudan, President of Southern Sudan and Chairman of the SPLM, General Salva Kiir Mayardit and the SPLM Secretary General that call upon the signatories of the CPA the CNP and the SPLM to immediately sort out their differences and devote their time to serving all Sudanese. We believe in freedom of expression and wish it to all our nations.

Thank you

On behalf of the SPLM Chapter
