UDP leader gets out of prison with testimonies over his ordeal

By Ngor Arol Garang

December 8, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Mr. Tong Lual Ayat; who had been arrested by Northern Bahr el Ghazal State authorities for launching activities of his newly formed political party in Aweil, got out of prison with lots of testimonies.

A addressing a press conference in Arkwit, Khartoum, on Tuesday, Ayat said it is an insult to supporters and members of any political figure when a party in power such as SPLM in the south or NCP in the North takes laws into their own hands to arrest leaders of other political parties leaders like street criminals.

“I was not a criminal and so were Pagan Amum and Yasir Saeed Arman yesterday when I was indiscriminately arrested in Aweil town,” he said adding they were protesting against repressive laws such as national security act and democratic reforms laws.

“Is this the New Sudan vision which the SPLM aspires to achieve through popular participation by expressing their frustration against intentions to silence them from speaking out on issues of national concerns through intimidation and refusing to allow freedom is an act of dictatorship.”

Ayat said had been surprised to see leaders of the same SPLM which arrested him in Aweil town joining demonstration yesterday in Khartoum, while they remained silent during his arrest in Aweil.

The arrest of the SPLM officials yesterday over demands for democratic reforms clearly explains I was innocently arrested, he adds.

Getting into details of how he was released, he said the Governor of Northern Bhar el Ghazal State sent a vehicle to Wunyiik third Division at secret prison called Loki where he was arrested on 19 November to pick up him at around eight in the evening to Aweil.

In Aweil, he was accommodated in South Sudan Hotel for one night and on the 20th, a meeting between me and Governor was organized by the Director for public Security.

“Both of us met and we discussed several issues with my arrest without explanation being the topic,” he added.

He stressed that the governor failed to give him proper reason of the arrest insisting that he should have gone first to Juba for registration forgetting that political parties including SPLM were not registered in Khartoum not Juba, he said

The official continued to narrate that he was humiliated and treated like a criminal or war prisoner in Prison.

“I was placed under the tree with my leg chained and locked with the big padlock; he said adding that he was arrested with fifteen others who were members of his party. All of us were chained sharing 50 cm chain under a tree home to many snakes and hostile creatures,” he said.

“We face heat during the day and cold at night,” he said adding that they were neither allowed take bath nor allowed go to toilets in prison. There was no food to eat as our food was used to be eaten by guards guarding prison.”

The UDP leader said he had been subjected to physical assault and threats that he was sent by the National Congress Party to betray Southern interest like the SPLM-DC.

    Tong Laul Ayat.

I think this is not a good time to formed Party before anythings did not come good in Southern Sudan. Some people don’t understand that, forming many Parties mean destruction and too much misunderstanding will happen in Southern Sudan and I wish if people are caring about rebuilding Southern Sudan to become a good nation just like many others in the world then, they should be patience and work hand by hand together because the problems was not about lacking many Parties, the problems was about other part in Sudan get good treatment and others faces punishment as the way the Khatroum government treating us was even beyond than second citizens and punishment.

Those who formed 9 Parties a part from SPLM Party, these nine Parties are meaningless in Southern Sudan. We do know that, the SPLM Party will be the Republic Party if the Southern Sudanese people are going to gain her independence in the coming months, it should be name Southern Sudan Republican, because this is the ruling Party in Southern Sudan. I would suggesting the second would be democratic Party unlikely to SPLM DC policy and they Ideas of forming Party should be directly to the people to explain more to the people about why this Party is formed and what are its purpose but not just a leadership issue and personally interest matter. Any way to tell him to be patience and he want to know that, the reason why SPLA/M fought for 21 plus years was not because of having few Parties in the Southern Sudan. It was about generally different views within Sudan government.

The difference between your arrest and that of the SPLM including other northern parties is that, your part is doing smuggling business of leisure fair party NCP while the later are working for the rights of the Sudanese including your children.

If your master Bashir is arrested, the world will celebrate.
