Sudanese president meets with Kiir amid growing political tension
December 10, 2009 (KHARTOUM) –Sudanese president and his two deputies held today a series of meeting aiming to resolve the current differences between the two partners of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The First Vice-President regretted the illegal arrest saying “the NCP leadership has been resisting constitutional obligations by using their mechanical majority in both organs of government to pursue their own political agenda.”
However, in remarks he made Wednesday in Juba, Kiir rejected slogans for the fall of the government of President Bashir saying that his fate is linked to the Sudanese President. He also said that his party through demonstration meant to voice out their position but have no intention to overthrow him.
Following his arrival Salva Kiir met this morning with the leading members of his party in Khartoum before to first meeting with the president Bashir. However the two
resumed their talks this evening but nothing was made public.
The SPLM members, who had been detained, reportedly asked Kiir to raise their arrest and beats during the meeting with Al-Bashir. They also said the responsible should face justice.
The SPLM asked its peace partners since October to set a calendar for the bills dealing with the national security law, southern Sudan referendum and popular consultations.
Talks on referendum bill, between the two partners are deadlock as they failed to agree on the issue.
Sudanese government had planned today to include the referendum bill in the agenda of the cabinet meeting but the boycott of the SPLM ministers prevented the discussion.
The ruling NCP is insisting on a two-thirds turnout for the referendum to be valid but the SPLM rejects the proposed percentage.
Both sides appear to be in agreement on the 51% ‘Yes’ votes to declare that Southerners chose independence.
