Sierra Leone will send 160 military personnel to join the UNAIMD, Free Town announced earlier this month.

“The contingent consists of 53 peacekeepers, 4 of them women, and is led by Lieutenant Colonel S.E.T. Marah,” reported the daily bulletin of the hybrid operation. The advance group it includes 30 personnel from the engineering division.

Deputy Chief of Defense Staff of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces Brigadier Robert Koroma said on December 3, that all the necessary logistics of the contingent have been sent well in advance.

The Sierra Leone peacekeepers who arrived in South Darfur today, will conduct security and confidence-building patrols. They will also provide escorts for humanitarian missions to hazardous areas, thus ensuring the arrival of aid to many IDPs.

There are now nearly 15,000 military personnel from 38 countries deployed in the mission, representing over 76% of the authorised strength.

Earlier this year UNAMID said expecting to reach 95% of its full strength: 20,000 troops and more than 6,000 police or civilian personnel before the end of 2009.
