Lakes state caucus chairman to seek governorship

By Manyang Mayom

December 21, 2009 (RUMBEK) – The chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) caucus in Lakes state parliament has declared his candidacy for the post of governor, which is to be contested by secret ballot in April 2010. Gordon Maper Manyiel declared his candidacy at Sunday prayers in Rumbek.

The new candidate said “I will contest for the governorship of Lakes state and I need more votes. I will ensure everyone that I will change this unhealthy state into a healthy state of justice”.

Lakes state students in Nairobi voiced their support toward his candidacy, calling him an excellent choice for the governorship, in contrast to the leadership of the current governor Lt-Gen Daniel Awet, said a student who wished to remain unnamed.

Searching for consensus on a nominee, the SPLM state secretariat had held two days of closed-door meetings from 16-17 December, 2009. The discussion focused on how nominations would be done in Lakes state. But the local politicians failed to agree on the right criteria and the meeting ended without solution.

SPLM Southern Sector based in Juba then sent in a team to Rumbek to resolve the political row. In some cases, legislative nominations are also deadlocked. The nominations process became intractable in the two counties of Yirol and Rumbek East, where there are more educated people who find it difficult to listen to each another and to elect one person.

Another nomination to the governorship over the weekend was subsequently dismissed by the nominee. Telar Ring Deng, a former state minister at the Sudanese presidency, stated in an e-mail message to Sudan Tribune, “I understand some individual by name Young [Ayong] Deng nominated me for the position of the Governor for Lakes State. To the best of my knowledge I have not yet declared to contest for any political position at any level. I thank Young Deng for nominating me for the position thereof, but at the moment I have not put myself forward for the position therein.”

Does it mean that everyone who has gone to school in Lakes State must contest for the position of the governor? I am sorry; it sounds silly to me. Those who are politically capable must be elected to lead us into prosperity.

Haahaa, it is absurd everyone assumed to be a leader in this State.Anyway Iam not tempted to be bias to anyone since we sourtherners want to encourage and establish freedom of speech, democracy and right of individual in our society but this time we need to be skiptical and vigilant to elect the leader that can bring fundmental transformation of rules in the state. It is obvious that the justic system in Lakes state is totally corrupt and collasped under imcomptent leadership of Governor Awet. Let us not be fool again this time. The year 2010 will be a good year to all southerners and people of Lakes state in particular to excercise their rights to reshapes this poor governance and mismanagement of public fund through their votes. My cordial advices to them is that they need to elect a leader that can be cooperative, affable and approachable to ordinary citizens. We need the leaders that will promotes and establish peace,civic-oder and social development, not those who used to hindered people not to express the views. They people of greater Lakes will work together hand in hand to bring in the new team that should mitigates and resuscites our people from balantly belligerent attitudes of currrent leadership. in all in all I don’t want the current Governor Awet,I don’t want self-assertive man Daniel Deng Monydit nor Gordon Maper Manyiel there are all deviants.I want to hear the new list for candidates inclusively.
