Abyei traditional leaders call for reconciliatory dialogue

December 23, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Abyei traditional leaders in collaboration with Local unions have called for reconciliatory dialogue and tolerance among stakeholders in the region.

The call comes in reaction to recent media releases of friction between Abyei chief Administration, Brigadier General Arop Mayak Monytoc and two of his cabinet members, following directives from Chief Administrator arresting two of the Director Generals in his administration, one in the department of Physical infrastructure and the other in Finance over financial scandal allegations and defiance to administrative instruction.

Speaking from Abyei town, Arop Kuol, a known influential chief in the area called to avoid confrontation as it has potentials to derail consultations that seeks settlements what he described burning and important issues to the residents of Abyei

“We have a lot to discuss through collectively exerted consultations as individuals and as community speaking on Abyei with unified voices,” he said

However, he said, nowhere could be reached or achieved if we begin to talk about individuals tracing their political or social dominance in either Sudanese politics or at local affairs.

Southern Sudan government President Salva Kiir Mayadrit held recently a meeting with the chief administrator and the two officials in order to settle their difference. But the two local officials continued after the meeting to release hostile statements over their difference through the media.

“I want to ensure that the differences are resolved within the shortest period of time. Our offices, as chiefs, he said, are ever opened anywhere and I am ready to initiate dialogue with any person or group of people who have pressing issues that he/she or they would like us to bring to bring to anybody attention for immediate settlement, he said.

He said he and other colleagues (chiefs) have started having consultations with various stakeholders on the matter.

“We had two meetings on Thursday and Friday last week with various stakeholders on this matter, he adding that other meetings will be held after two weeks when the festive season comes to an end,” he said.

The governance indicators contribute to the growing empirical research of governance which have provided wrong activists and reformers to Abyei with advocacy tools for policy reform and monitoring.

The indicators, and the underlying data behind them, are part of the current research and opinions that have reinforced the experiences and observations of reform-minded individuals in government of El Bashir to work against the administration of their people in Abyei, civil society, and the private sector, that good governance is key for development.

Their growing recognition of the link between good governance and successful development, as empirical evidence suggests, has stimulated demand for monitoring the quality of governance across country and within individual country part over time.

Virtually all of the individual data sources underlying the aggregate indicators are, along with the aggregate indicators themselves, publicly available.
