Egypt cautions against South Sudan secession

December 26, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The Egyptian government reiterated its position opposing the choice of South Sudan independence in the 2011 referendum, its top diplomat said today.

The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit in a TV interview described the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between North and South as “tense”.

“We in Egypt believe that the separation [of South Sudan] will incur dangers on the people of the South and its relations with the North” Aboul-Gheit said.

“There may be fighting or civil war and maybe both sides will not be happy with the outcome” he added.

The CPA allows Southern Sudanese to hold a referendum in 2011 to choose whether they want to have their own state or remain part of united Sudan.

Egypt has historically been wary of splitting Sudan up for fear that it will affect its share of the Nile waters which it considers its lifeline. Sudan’s Northern neighbor sought to inaugurate a number of development projects in South Sudan hoping to temper the secessionist mood.

Aboul-Gheit also expressed his government concern with the continuation of the conflict in Darfur.

“Sudan is going through a very difficult period because the resolution [talks] between the central government and the rebel groups in Darfur region did not achieve the desired goal which is a threat to Sudan” he said.

Cairo has invited various Darfur rebel groups this year in an attempt to unite their negotiating positions and seek a platform alternative to the one in Qatar.

Please mr Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed, the independent of South will be more beneficial than the unity. I though that you have known that this country never achieved it goals since 1956 upto now because the Khartoum government still want to used their contradicting ideologies that in fact differs with those of South.
The govt of Khartoum is more criminal and terrorist that believed in self- sucude of bombing and blast of human kind. We can not tellorate this inhuman behaviors.

    Dear brothers.

The main issue uniting Cairo and Khartoum is maintaining a status quo regarding the Nile lifeline.

Egypt belief that an independent South Sudan is highly likely to collaborate with other African countries like Ethiopia, Keny and Uganda and block the source of Egypt prosperity- The River Nile water.

Let H.E the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit know that People of South Sudan will never forget that they have been deliberately marginalized politically, socially, and economically for over a century and treated as lesser human beings by the Egyptian and Arab regimes in Khartoum. And hopefully the South Sudan secession will be soon.

South Sudan will not and will never get any negative empacts when they choose to secade. Egypt is afraid of any reduction in thier monopoly of the Nile waters.
