Messeriya tribe calls on President Bashir not to sign Abyei referendum law

January 3, 2010 (JUBA) – Representatives of the Messeriya tribe in Abyei have called on the President of the Republic, Field Marshal Omer Hassan Al-Bashir not to sign the recently endorsed Abyei referendum law, saying it should be returned to the parliament for further discussions.

They have also warned that the tribe will not allow the implementation of the law if signed in its current form and will hinder the demarcation process of the Abyei geographical boundary.

The parliament on Wednesday passed the law amid protest from the representatives of the Messeriya tribe, which described the law as a “conspiracy” against their ethnic group.

The Messeriya bloc in the National Assembly walked out of parliament before the endorsement of the bill, arguing that the tribe was not mentioned by name in the law to vote in the Abyei referendum together with Dinka Ngok.

A leading member of the tribe Abdel Rusul Al-Nur on Saturday explained the move against the bill, adding that the Messeriya would do every thing they could to hinder its implementation.

“This law must go back to the parliament and we appeal to the President of the Republic not to sign the law because it was endorsed in a decision by which we will not recognize the law; and we will not deal with it and we will seek every means to enable ourselves to annul this racial and bias law,” he said.

The parliament earlier passed other two laws for Southern Sudan referendum and popular consultations for Southern Kordofan and Southern Blue Nile states.

None of the three bills passed by the parliament has been signed into law by the President of the Republic.

    MESSERIYA HANDS OFF ABYEI

I call upon Messeriya to take their hands off Abyei. Abyei is for the Southerners not for the north. Whether they like it or not it belongs to Southerners and it is ordained by God, Land of the Blacks!!!
