Jonglei SPLM Electoral College starts to select candidates

By Philip Thon Aleu

January 6, 2010 (BOR) – Jonglei State SPLM Electoral College commenced a four-day party’s candidate nomination process here today, Wednesday. The 25-member committee will screen applications of members seeking election on the party ticket in April polls.

Electionp.jpgSpeaking at the opening session of the selection exercise in Dr. John Garang Institute of Science and Technology on Wednesday morning, Gov. Kuol told the Electoral College members the party’s nominees, at the end of the day, will determine the future of South Sudan.

The governor, who is aspiring to stand for the gubernatorial post, says the country has had wars but one of them is a lifetime struggle: development. “We have many enemies. There are many wars but development [is another war] and a lifetime struggle,” said Gov. Kuol.

Jonglei State SPLM Electoral College is chaired by Gatkuoth Tiop Bol and composed of 25 members from all counties that also reflect the six tribes in the state. In some constituencies, more than one candidate applied for the same seat on the SPLM ticket. The College is, therefore, to confirm or void applications from party members interested in parliamentary seats in the Jonglei State and Southern Sudan Legislative Assemblies. It is not immediately clear whether gubernatorial positions will be decided at state SPLM level.

Appreciating difficulties ahead of Electoral College members, Gov. Kuol observed that not all SPLM members interested in the same post will be happy at the end of the selection exercise. “But this is the power of democracy we fought for,” he said.

Deputy Gov. Hussein Mar Nyuot earlier stressed that SPLM Electoral College is “not to appease anyone” but will select her candidates as provided in the application forms.

Besides the governor and his deputy, Both Chuol, the state SPLM secretary general was also present to bless the selection commencement. State Minister of Information Timothy Taban Juch, State Attorney Mayen Oka were also in attendance. A member of State National Election Committee Dr. Mum Kou also observed the SPLM nomination opening ceremony. The state party leaders spoke at length of transparency, sincerity and accountability during the nomination that ends this Saturday according to members. Some state SPLM figures who are not members of the Electoral College only witnessed the opening exercise of the party’s selection process.

For his part as the host, Prof. Agrey Ayuen Majok, the President of Dr. John Garang Institute of Science and Technology, says the April elections have two purposes: national transformation and building.

Though some candidates were to be confirmed on Wednesday, all state-wide nominees will only be made public Saturday evening. The committee declined to release names of candidates for various parliamentary or gubernatorial seats to the press, in name of confidentiality, but it pledges fairness in the process.

The selection committee has a heavy task to accomplish: choosing the best candidates while awarding marks to long-time SPLM members whose commitments to the party are rooted in the war of liberation.

Dinkas Boy must be given a chance to contest. He is a pure SPLA booster who claim himself to have fought for 5 years before making his trip somewhere, I don’t know. James has been silent for the last few weeks. I think he is busy advising his murle to get ready for democracy, and we have seem that since the last few months, we are living in peace. This is what I am yearning for. Dinkas boys should fit as a youth leader in order to bring his youths together. Dinkas boy and James must not be forgetton, becuse they will play a great role within their state. which will improve the border situation, cattle riding, insecurity and other issues. Its all about encouraging democracy, love, peace and unity. Once again Dinkas boy don’t pull behind, thrown your application infront and grab yourself a chance, I am not among those leaders in order to select you for the position. I want you to apply as soon as possible. democracy matters.

Kuol Mayang made a very good admission and very important, south sudan have two main problems 1- Many enemies, 2- Development.

Now how can this two issues be solved? It can only be solved through uniting our people, having a comprehensive plan involving all our government institutions, first there have to be a clear plan and good organization within the system, bring in well qualified sons of the country and put them into positions and let them work out comprehensive plans in coodination with all government sectors, then lay out the plan to the states and central govertnment leadership, then execute the plans accordingly without beating around the bush or corruptiing the system.

This is how problems can be solved, but if we talk meanwhile we do nto work on our promisese then we can not overcome this issues that mr Mayang have rised.

The development problem will be solved together by all southerners working together to achieve a common goal with help and support from the central south sudan governemnt which people put their hope and trust in that government.

The enemies will be dealth with through peace or confrontation whichever fits the situation at the time,by preparing ways on how to deal with the enemies in different ways, the enemy will be fought in many different ways not in way way direction.

Devepment is a life long and never ending process in life, it is the process of going from on level to a higher level through making nessecary and important changes in the human life, this comes through collective work of all people but the government is the driver of the train which is taking everyone, if the government makes a mistake in driving the trian then the accident will hit everyone, every single step has to be though, studied and planned then executed by the government, the government need to employ qualified individuals (qualified with right knowledge, experience and determination) and get experience people from the sudanese nationals to continue the development process without interference or sabotage.

Governments in the state elev and central level has to have confidence and determionation to succeed and achioeve high standards in development, bring in right people , do not wait or hessitate, they have to sudanese so they can be committed to their country.

All this will happen if the citizens elect people who will truely represent them and work for development and provision or services and bring security and stability, elect someone who will achieve something, do not elect them if can are not capable, even if they are your family member.

Electoral College must release the name of the candidates to the public before the election day.

The Electoral Colleges need to release the names of the cadidates who wanted to run for Governor position, so that they can begin their compaign before the election day.

Refusal to release the name of the candidates to the public, means that governor Kuol Manyang will have a chance to win again for second term.

    Thank you all
