Sudan does not rule out possibility of Bashir-Deby summit at AU summit

January 8, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Osman Ismail said today that the relations with Chad are supposed to be “firm” and “far away from differences”.

Ismail quoted by Sudanese official news agency (SUNA) said that steps taken toward normalization of the relations between the two countries are promising leading to further steps along this path.

Chad and Sudan agreed last month to implement a security deal aiming to monitoring the border and to evacuate the rebel groups far from it. Joint committee will meet next week in Ndjamena to discuss the details of troops’ deployment.

The recent move has been hailed by Washington which had attempted to convince Deby to push Darfur rebels to take part in Darfur peace talks.

The improvement of bilateral talks is seen as crucial to end the six year conflict in Darfur.

Ismail did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and the Chadian President, Idris Deby at the African Union (AU) Summit which is scheduled to be held at the end of January.

He added that the expectation of failure for reaching the goal of normalization should not prevent from consistently working on it.

In a related development the Sudanese ambassador to Chad said that a military delegation arrived at Ndjamena to discuss border control “in its true meaning” and disclosed that the plan is to establish five checkpoints each inside both countries.
