UNMIS urges South Sudan to investigate tribal violence

January 9, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) today voiced concern over recent tribal violence in southern Sudan Warrap state and urged the semi-autonomous government to investigate these incidents.

Cattle raiders from Unity state killed some 139 people during an attack on neighbouring Tonj East County in Warrap state. The fighting, purportedly over cattle, also left at least 90 wounded and several thousands head of cattle looted.

The bloody attack come after other tribal clashes in Lakes State where about 24 military and civilians were killed last December and this month.

Mr. Ashraf Qazi, head of the UN mission in Sudan, urged the southern Sudan government “to investigate these incidents and to redouble their efforts to help de-escalate the rising wave of violence in southern Sudan.” He also requested Juba to redouble their efforts to help de-escalate the rising wave of violence in the region.

He also disclosed that the UNMIS offered to send peacekeeping troops to the Lakes to help protect civilians during the rotations of SPLA companies that were involved in confrontations with civilian cattle-keepers in Akot, near Rumbek, in late December and early January.

“In Atar, Jonglei State, UNMIS flew senior government officials into the area and helped to deliver government-provided humanitarian aid on the day of the attack during which several civilians were killed and an estimated 100 tukuls were burned. Humanitarian agencies are bringing further assistance to the victims in the days ahead,” he added

Qazi said his mission dispatched last December a team of peacekeepers to defuse tensions and aid workers to assess humanitarian needs there following the displacement triggered by the clashes.

UNMIS urges South Sudan to investigate tribal violence
UNMIS I agree that this tribal problems must be blame on the idle Government of South Sudan, GOSS has fail to play a fundamental strategy of putting South Sudan in peace and unity. With current attitude of people in South Sudan, we will never live in unity although we sing about separation which seem to be a sweet fruit of our dreams. Each day, each week and month reaching year we lost more than 5000 lives in South Sudan. What does it mean to GOSS and the people of South Sudan who are in charge? I always yearn for police force to be distributed within the hostile borders, but GOSS has been so silent, only waiting for the agony to happen again and again.

Why can’t we start to live united before breaking out of the arab busket? what is really hard about the settlement of security in South Sudan? why can’t we try changes in the government and see how big difference we can make. Apart from accepting the changes, Is there anyone from outside World who is going to come and start improving the situation? the answer is NO, even those of UK ministers who are supplying us with millions will not approcah that part, its our business of either keep messing up or do something good. When there is always an error, people take possible try an error to gather with its solution. The same that we must try something like changes within the government. South Sudan has its dreams of democracy not tyrant, why can’t we make a start right now by removing the harmful part of the government.
