SPLM nominates Yasir Arman to contest against Bashir

January 14, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has nominated Yasir Arman to run for the presidency of the country in the first free and fair election since the coup d’état that brought General Al Bashir to power on June 30, 1989.

yasir_Arman_-_reuters.jpgThe nominee is a senior figure in the party, serving as Deputy Secretary General for Northern Sudan and the head of the SPLM bloc in the National Assembly. He will face Al Bashir, who on Monday stepped down from his role as army commander-in-chief to vie for the votes that would legitimize his 20-year rule through the National Islamic Front, now called the National Congress Party.

“The Hero Yasir Saeed Arman has been nominated by SPLM Leadership to run against President Bashir,” the head of the Southern Sudan Mission in Washington, D.C., Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth told Sudan Tribune.

SPLM, a party with some strongly separatist elements, had waited until a week prior to the final deadline for nominating a candidate. The party’s leader Salva Kiir Mayardit refused at a meeting of the SPLM Political Bureau several months ago to run for the presidency, preferring to focus on heading the Southern Sudan government.

Another potential candidate, the chairman’s first deputy Riek Machar, had declined to run unless he were also appointed head of the party, a demand to which Salva Kiir found difficult to accede.

This designation stops rumors about SPLM agreeing to endorse the candidacy of President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir. Also, it had been circulated that the chairman of the Umma Party Sadiq Al-Mahdi would be the candidate of the collective Juba opposition forces.

Arman articulated his party’s national ambitions in an interview with Sudan Tribune one year ago. “In many occasions the SPLM in the north has demonstrated that it is growing, it is a force to reckon with. In fact it is one of the biggest forces, and it is to be noted that the SPLM—the movement that started in South Sudan, it is the first movement in the history of Sudan that started in a marginalized area and then it engulfed the whole of Sudan.”

The candidate’s history of opposition and exile eventually brought him into an alliance with the rebel Southerners. Prior to joining the SPLM, which had some Marxist orientation itself, at the university Arman had been a member of the National Democratic Front, a student coalition between the communists and the democrats.

While he was a student in the faculty of law at the University of Cairo in Khartoum, Arman had to flee the country in February 1986, accused unjustly of murdering a member of the National Islamic Front which turned into the National Congress Party.

However, Arman become widely known because he presented the news bulletin for SPLM Radio and afterward in 1995 he read the news bulletin of the opposition National Democratic Alliance from Asmara, Yemen.

The northern politician is married to a Dinka woman from Abyei belonging to one of the biggest families of the area.

His relations with the Sudanese Islamists remain tense and combative. In 2007, following the return of the SPLM ministers to the government, First Vice President Salva Kiir proposed Arman’s appointment as adviser at the presidency but for the first and last time President Bashir vetoed it.

With regard to his relations within the party, the Deputy Secretary General for Northern Sudan is reported to have had strangely conflictual relations with the Secretary General, Pa’gan Amum.

Nonetheless, in the capital Arman is seen as a very active figure participating in all the political events there. This dynamic could draw him the support of the small political formations in the country.

Dr. Justin Ramba & Dr. James Okuk,

Great insights!! Kiir’s deathly foolish decision of “Selective violation of the constitution in south Sudan in order to approve Kiir’s candidacy amounts to a coup”, would NOT be allowed!! Dr. luka Biong Deng does not understand the rule of law. This is the moment of truth. He has been misleading the semi-illiterate Kiir for the last five years of CPA. Let’s see who really owns south sudan. Luka Biong/Kiir dictatorship madness or the south sudanese public who overwhelmingly rejected Kiir & Luka Biong corrupted manipulation of the rule of law.

Bravo SPLM for the well-executed move! This will now clear the field for a great contest between the criminal regime and the SPLM. Sudan will never be the same again. CDR Yasser Arman has the potentials to attract votes in the the North because he is an honest and straightforward fellow.

Now we can rest assured that traitors will weep in shame.

    THIS NOMINATION WAS NOT RIGHT

Mr. Yasir Arman was not the right person to contest against Al Bashir. It seems to me that President Bashir will win his second term again.

Then, South will return to war with North again.

This foolishly decision of nominated a muslim candidate to contest against another muslim candidate came from Stupid Dinkas.

This nomination is not yet over. Dr. Riek Machar is the right candidate to contest against Al Bashir, according Prophert NGunDeng.

    Thank you all

Yasir Arman has been a loyal SPLM cadre since the beginning. I fully support him, and I hope Southerners and Northerners will support him too. If you read this Cde Arman: please ignore some the harsh words you will see from others, they are ignorant, and worse still ungrateful for all the hard work and others in the movement have been doing do bring us this close to freedom. SPLM Oyeee! Cde Yasir Arman Oyee! Gen Salva Kiir Mayardiit Oyee! Dr. Riek Machar Oyee!

    Dear Readers,

This is not news at all. Why SPLM Government nominated Yasir Arman? Where is the Coward President Kiir? Which direction (Kiir) is taking us to? Mr Kiir Why you become first Vice president of Republic, president of the Governmnet of Southern Sudan, SPLM Chairman and commander in Chief of the SPLA? Was it because of the conititution?

you clearly violated the CPA mr president.

I believe that the National ELection commission will reject the Yasir Arman’s nomination.

Let us and see what will happen from NEC

I don’t care who is chosen but my questions may go this way
Does South Sudan have a Constitution?
Does Political party handpick a candidate or the party leader is auotmatically the flag bearer once elections time come?
If Salva Kiir knows that he is not a politician why did he got himself into this hot cup?

Otherwise there is still one big problem within SPLM/A, there must be different between SPLA as army wing and SPLM as political party very separate entity.
why are we mixing stuffs which doesn’t match.
Why can’t you follow your big fish example.

Follower Southerners, Let us not fear and have no doubts, even if, neither Salva Kir nor Dr.Riek Machar does not contest for presidency. These two guys should remain and prepared to respond to any unforeseeable tricks the NCP is likely to resort to as result of amounting pressures and the difficult times it is currently facing and has left with no choice but sooner to surrender their adamant leader the so-called Al-Bashir whose days are seriously counting down. I for one, like any other die-hard supporters of Late Dr.John Garang DeMaboir ideology will never allow the history of 1972 to repeat itself.

While acknowledging, the weaknesses of some of the SPLM leaders .Our is enemy remains one the ISLAMIC regime. We need freedom, good governance, independence and development.Mr AL-Bashir and your Collaborators you are soon going to miss resources, wealth, and oil of South Sudan.

Hon. Judge Abel Alier is a silent killer when it comes to law enforcement. No joke; even the Abyei brother-in-law,the jellaba Yasser Arman may get disqualified to run fot the Sudan Presidential seat during the elections because there are criminal legal cases against him pending in the court in Khartoum regarding murder and insult to Khartoum State Police.

YASSER ARMAN is the best candidate for this election, he represent the true identity of Sudan, He is a muslims and married to a southerner, this makes him a nuetral Sudanese personality, he represent the diversity and all background of Sudan, he believes in democratic values unlike some hardline northern politicians, He has been in the struggle for freedom and rights of marginalize Sudanese with SPLM since day one, He organized the northern sectors for SPLM and has helped to bring a new characteristic of toleraence, unity and freedom of expression into Sudanese politics, all things which did not exis before, he is a major supporter of the New Sudan idea of Dr John Garang, Arman believe both north and south can live together if they tolerate eachother and listen to eachother and respected eachother, he has alot of support in the osuth compared to any NCP politician including Omer bashir, he also played a big role to bring up SPLM support in north sudan, so he is the right, as a muslim he can also appealk to muslims in north sudan and will have no problem being a president of Sudan, so all this factors make Yasser Arman actually the most qualified candidate to be a Sudanese president, he is far better th an the Islamic extremists Omer bashir.

To those who are rooting for separating the south from the north, I would say this is not the right solution. This is what the enemy is looking for; we need to be more united than separated. And I think to have election on that is wrong, and even if it’s okay to vote, I feel that every citizen in Sudan has the right to vote on that not only the south. What kind of equal rights is that? . People from the north have the same rights in the south and vise versa. If you look around or check the history you will find that most powerful nations are the united ones (e.g. USA, USSR, proposed European Union, etc.). I am from Odurman, and I realize that there are many ignorant people in Sudan and other countries who promote discrimination. Africa as a whole have pride in tribes (each tribe thinks they are better than others). Even in South Sudan Dinka Vs. Nuir etc. So we need to educate our new generations to adopt unity and equal rights for all (sound like a dream) but that is the only way out. This is not a religion issue, as all religions don’t promote discrimination. It is the people who make those mistakes. A real example is Dar Fur (Muslims against Muslims), so it is all about tribal war and pride. I can grantee you one thing, if South Sudan separate from the north it will no be peaceful county (many tribal war). So please leave race and religion alone, I am a Muslim, Islam teach me to treat people equal, the word Islam itself means Peace (Salam) and total submission to God. Profit Mohamed (peace be upon him), came to teach us how to follow the right teachings of all the great profits of God who came with the same message (e.g. Isa / Jesus, Mousa, etc.) peace be upon them all. As matter of fact if you read the Quran, you will find that Jesus peace be upon him was mentioned more than any other profit including profit Mohamed himself. So I invite all of you to seek the truth and read about Islam just for your knowledge. I am not trying to convince you here as we as Muslims we believe only God can do that. Our duty is to just ask you to seek knowledge. By the way Islam is not only for Arabs. As matter of fact Arabs are only 15% of total Muslims today. Islam also is the most growing religion because by becoming Muslim you will follow the correct teaching of Jusus peace be upon him, who by the way was born in the middle east and spoke Aramic, which is the sister language of Arabic not English. Some Europeans stole the true bible and changed it over the time, that’s why you see many versions of it.

Sorry I did not mean to turn this to religion debate, but thought to share my views with you. After all we all humans came from the same origin, so let us leave all the tribal prides and leave in peace. It may take time but if we stick to it, it will happen one day. May be not this generation but the next one.

This is shit! All the fight we fought for is now useless because we are back to praising Jallabas & licking their boots. Think twice Southerners, did the blood we poured on our land & the lives we lost are just for us to become a Jallabas’ boot lickers or to liberate ourselves from the oppressors who are the Jallabas?

Think guys, think! Jallaba is a Jallaba whether he’s on our side or on the enemies’ side, the day will come when he’ll turn against you & your country & you’ll suffer endlessly for good.

If you want to be a Jallabas’ boot leaker you vote for Arman who’s another Jallaba from Shendi, if you aren’t a Jallaba bootlicker don’t vote for Arman! Am not voting at all, am not a bootlicker & i’ll never be one in my life.
    Think guys, cheers.
