Lam Akol runs for presidency in South Sudan

January 15, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The former Sudanese foreign and head of the Sudan People Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) Lam Akol will run for the post of South Sudan president, according to a statement released by his office.

Lam Akol
Lam Akol
“The Alliance of Southern Sudan Political Parties which was in the South-South Dialogue in Khartoum last year met officially on Wednesday 13th January 2010 in Khartoum to nominate a Presidential candidate for the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS)” the statement reads.

“The SPLM-DC presented their candidate then, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who was swiftly endorse[d] by the Alliance as the candidate to be supported by the Alliance in their bid to win the GoSS Presidency in the coming Elections”.

Akol was a leading figure in the legacy SPLM party but his close ties to the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) led by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir has alienated his colleagues at the ex-Southern rebel group.

Akol has insisted at the time that the SPLM partnership with the NCP is particularly valuable and also campaigned in favor of the Sudanese President after the issuance by the International criminal Court of an arrest warrant against him.

The alliance expressed support to Bashir candidacy for president of the country.

“President Al Bashir is the only person to sign working peace agreement in Southern Sudan, Darfur, and the Eastern Region….. El Bashir was also credited with stopping wars and the bloodshed which had plagued the nation for so long. Also the inclusive administration instituted by President Al Bashir already is a good step for political pluralism and social and cultural diversity. Mr. Bashir is the very one now working to implement democratic transformation and as it was embodied in the interim Constitution of the country and the CPA and he should be given the chance to continue with this”.

“Bashir has to be given the chance to complete the implementation of the CPA and the other agreement which he had signed while serving current term. Many challenges remain and the alliance of Southern Political partied believes it is only Al Bashir who can overcame the challenges that remain in implementing the peace agreements”.

Last year, the former foreign minister announced the establishment of the SPLM-DC party which angered the SPLM party which sought to prevent it from using the name.

Furthermore, late last year South Sudan president Salva Kiir issued a directive banning the SPLM-DC activities in the South. However, the Sudanese Constitutional Court ruled in favor of Akol’s appeal against the decision.

    Hello Equatorians and Non Equatorians!
When I say Equatorians I mean the three states of Greater Equatoria—Central Equatoria, Western Equatoria, and Eastern Equatoria, plus any person who do not tolerate tribalism, corruption, and non-democratic activities.

My message to you is that incase this election will happen, please cast all your votes for Yasir Arman, as the National president of Sudan, and Dr.Lam Akol as the president for South Sudan. Greater Equatorians are far from tribalism and any crude nonsense; they are peaceful, kind and responsible people. They are civilized, hence are not after power struggle, like the Dinkas and the Nuers are battling now. Time will come for the Equatorians to lead this country and bring it to stability—just like Joseph Lagu, the founder of South Sudan, from whom Kiir and all Southern Sudanese follow footsteps to correct the current turmoil in Sudan/South Sudan. Lagu is the eye of South Sudan.
I have proved Kiir incompetent for the last four years, therefore I’m not going to cast my vote to him; Kiir is corrupt (I mean he refuses to bring his tribe-mates who practices corruption in GoSS to justice and to follow the law, and he has disobeyed the law by practicing tribalism—by not standing or not accepting to be as the SPLM chief of Army, yet he failed to follow the constitution of the CPA-Sudan as of 2005 ignorantly. He favors some of his illiterate Dinka relatives, who are letting South Sudan down and making the world to laugh at us as if everyone in South Sudan is a Dinka, yet not.

South Sudan has more stronger and powerful people who can lead South Sudan to stability, free of corruption and tribalism.
Therefore, we should vote for Arman and Lam Akol. If they fail to fulfill our demands, we shall also vote them out from power, until we get the right people. We should not blackmail Akol as a traitor all the time—it is a fallacy…let him come to power so that we can see and disapprove him. We should not associate everything letting South Sudan collapse with NCP. The failures in South Sudan are not because of NCP, but because we have no determined and responsible leaders.
    Greetings to all Sudanese/South Sudanese!

    Dear brothers and Sisters,

The candidatcy of Dr Lam Akol encourage by his Party SPLM-DC is just dead end. Who in the South want the country to be rule by traitor.None.

Even some people will think that their nyagatism will unit them then they are not going to challenge Muonjang and other tribes who are with us during the war,but let the food lovers Nuer support him but still they will be short.
If Lam contest with Salva Kiir Mayardit then it is obvious that Salva will win and DR Lam Akol will take the position of Riek Machar if that is what Nuer want in the South.

Hahahaha, he is adead end human parasit who fool Riek Machar before, even Riek Machar will not make hime come closure to him because he is the husand of Riek.
He is nothing to Us Southerners.

Lam Akol is going to run for South’s presidency? That coward hasn’t stepped onto Southern soil since his treachery. Let’s see if he will even campaign in the South. I have a bad feeling that someone will not forgive him for his betrayal.

There is a long list of disqualification waiting for Salva Kiir’s candidacy in Khartoum’s NEC. I don’t think he will even get the chance to try to compete against Dr. Lam Akol. His candidacy may be rejected and the handpicked incompeten SPLM politburo may be asked again to nominate somebody else…

This can even safe time and resources instead of him trying an election he cannot win. The people of South Sudan are fed up of his leadership which is characterized by incompetence, tribalism, corruption, lack of vision, lack of development (service delivery), land grabbing and the list is too long…

Salvatore Kiir Miyerdit will either go to village in Warrap if they need him for the chieftancy or migrate to Australia and join his family there as dissident.

Akol is a middle between the North and South trying divert and create confusion among the Southerners. Anyone who knows Akol’s political background will not bother argueing since I don’t know wether he cleared his image in the eyes of southerners for his dubious deals with Arabs that had even tanish the image of Dr Riek whom he set as a puppet of achieving his interests.

Akol must give up his candidacy should he want develop his future political career. Southerners aren’t sleeping except the few who enjoy bribes of back slapping the South.

    Dear Southerners,

Both Salva Kiir and Dr.Lam Akoll are our candidates for the upcomining election, therefore all southerners should give freedom of movement to all the states of southern Sudan regardless of being SPLM or SPLM-DC to present their slogans to the electorates.

There should be no intimidation to any of the candidate and it is the qualities and Principles of a candidate that enable him to achieve success in the election.

Tribalism: All southerners whose heart is full of making tribal conflict or those who want to vote along tribal line are to shut up their mouth and wait for the time of voting .If you want to vote for your uncle ,just sit and vote silent and stop intimedating any of the Candidtes.

Competition for leadership in a democratic system will improve the services that will be deliver to the citizens compare to military regime of salva Kiir and Bashir where laws only work on written paper but not being apply.

The constitutions of Southern Sudan is very clear but its implementation is base on tribal bases.

My Message to Greater Equatorians and Peace Loving Citizens, is that the time for overthrowing dictatorials leaders by mean of ballot paper or vote has come and therefore join your hands to choose aleader of our choice BUT not a ruler.

What I know in my mine is that the Dinka will be voting along the tribal line regardless of qualifications of a candidate, Equatorians and peace loving citizens should not inovle in tribal issue. Our target is to choose a leader that can improve the fundamental services of the country such as security services, medical services, Education services, transport ,develoment and equal distribution of resources in the state.

5Years Evaluation Report of GoSS Activities Since 2005.

In the last five (5) years of Comprehensive Peace Agreement, lead by Salva Kiir, Southern Sudan had experienced critical tribal conflict in the states level especially in in Jonglei ,Malakal, Wau,Unity state, Rumbek and also grabbing of land in Central Equatoria State(Juba) by governement officials was a common phenomena. In all these bloodshed and atrocities committed by the GOSS official, the government kept silence but corruption and un equal distribution of reourcses had been the order of the day.The GoSS official had been practicing silence Genocide in the States of Southern Sudan and the report shows that about 658 people were murdered during the GoSS activities in Southern Sudan. This had affected the reult of the Census in Southern Sudan.

Report also indicates that military officials from the Rank of Captains to Lt. Generals had been giving armunitions to their villagers to raid with cattles and this contributed to tribal conflicts which resulted to lost of life.

According to this evaluation reoprt for GoSS activities in southern sudan, it’s enought for me to make the right Decision.

You people need to chill out and stop blaming game!!!!

Anybody who want to run has a right to run but what we need from them is what they can do people of South Sudan. We don’t need talk of talk. We want strategy. How is this individual going to run the South Sudan affairs?

    1. What can he (the candidate) do about North & South?
    2. Does each believe in Separation of South from North?
    3. What can he (the Candidate) do about Poverty; how can you elevate the living standard “ECONOMICALLY AND SOCIALLY”
    4. How about Education and Health care? What is your plan? What can you do?
    4. How are you going to tackle the insecurity and cattle wrestling (which caused inter-tribal) tribalism?
    5. How about Freedom of speech & Freedom of press?

Although we know each individual background on what they are capable of, still this is world of Democracy. Those who are contending need to convince us why he/she wanted us to vote for him as our next president?

We need answers, Agenda and how to achieve those goals. Rest of the Southerners and I are not interesting in blaming game or crying faults.

Lam has been crying faults, faults SPLM and being too pro-NCP but that won’t bring any solution at all. He needs to convince us Southerners not any pro-United Sudan.

Otherwise he needs to shout-up and turn his engineering degree into something tangible in the South by opening technical school and teach there as a teach so that next generation will know who he is, if he is after the well-being of South Sudan.

    Hello everybody,

2010 is the time for TRUTH. It is too late for tribalism and personal attacks. It is time for credentials, experience, honesty and political programs. It is the biggest chance for us to prove to the Jalaba and the whole world that we are democratic – not hypocrite. We want the same freedom (though not complete) prevailing in the North in the South. It is time for SPLM to show us, Southerners, that what the others are saying about lack of freedom of political organization and activity in SS can be corrected.

There are so many scenarios, but we need the best that lead to the united SS. Anything that triggers tribalism and injustice is no longer good for us. We need sincere people. I heard some people saying that influential Equatorian are cooking with leaders from Neur, Shiluk and other none-Dinka forces to outnumber the Dinka dominated SPLM/SPLA in the forthcoming election. This is a nightmare. All lovers of SS should not get themselves in such a deadly scenario. SPLM/A should swiftly fill the loop holes and utilize the few time left to unite Southerners. History will remember whatever we do. Let it be good!

Let whoever feels qualified to contest. Don’t put hurdles on the political transformation of our nation. Any scenario based on tribal lines will be the end of our hopes. Even God will not help us and for sure not the world.

SPLM should lead the march to safe, prosperous SS. It should mobilize the people from all the corners of the South to select the best man to their knowledge to whatever post. It is not the time of excluding the other or getting the support from the tribe only.

    Oh Ye Southerners UNITE.

    Hi guys!!!!. Iam back

SPLM-DC will win southerns persident election in 2010,if GOSS and people of south need democracy and living in peace. Dr Machiar is already blocked out in contest at one of positions, either south or north position.I think, Dr Lam Akol is the qualify for south Sudan president.

If I want more public fund to be looted,I will vote for Salva Kiir. If I want more innocents to be killed, I will vote for Salva Kiir. If I need other people’s lands to be taken, I will vote for Salva Kiir. If I want more tribal/recess at job opportunities,I will give my vote to Salva Kiir. If want Salva Kiir and his minsters to transfer south Sudan’s resource to other countries, I will vote for him.
Acting aggressively to fear others, may not help in the future.
