SPLM chooses Malong Awan to stand for NBGS gubernatorial post

By Ngor Arol Garang

January 17, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, SPLM, in the last sitting of its highest political body yesterday in Juba, the capital of the semi-autonomous region of South Sudan, picked incumbent governor Malong Awan Anei of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State (NBGS) for the same gubernatorial post in the upcoming elections in April.

As news of this development arrived in Aweil town today his supporters received it with smiles and dances chanting heroic songs of victory pledging their full support to help him win the next general election in the area.

“We knew Malong would come and it is up to those who were opposed to his return to do whatever they like, the fight is done,” said Ajou Deng in Aweil town.

“Whatever they are thinking about these results does not matter to us, we have rested our debates and finger-pointing at one another is now left to opponents,” he added.

He continued to add that he never doubted that SPLM would endorse Anei’s candidacy, being cognizant of his contribution to the movement during years of struggle. “He never changed and I do not think he will change in the near future no matter what happens, he stressed saying King Paul Oyee, Mading Aweil Oyee and President Kiir Oyee.”

However, critics of the governor – and likely also supporters of General Dau Aturjong Nyuol — denounced the result, doubting the criteria used to select candidates contesting on the SPLM ticket.

“The Political Bureau never looked at criteria used during the selection process; members there just looked at scores against names familiar and/or close to the chairman. They were not fair too,” said Hon. Akuei Ajou who was recently dropped from the State Electoral College list of successful nominees.

He was replaced with current minister of finance at the state government Garang Diing Akuong. But he has insisted to run the race as independent candidates arguing that he is still popular in the area.

Governor Malong’s candidacy was announced along with other aspiring candidates from the other southern states of Sudan. All of the party’s governors candidates for all the states of Sudan were vetted and finally approved by the 27-strong Political Bureau in Juba.
Some of the incumbent SPLM governors of South Sudan were selected by SPLM to stand for the posts again, but five will be replaced. Mr. Luis Lubang for Eastern Equatoria state replaces Brigadier General Ojetuk; Engineer Chol Tong for Lakes State replaces General Daniel Awet Akot; Mr. Riziq Zakaria for Western Bar Ghazel replaces Police General Mark Nyipuoc; Mrs. Nyadeng Malek for Warrap state replaces Tor Deng Mawien.

In Upper Nile state, where there is the incumbent NCP governor William Othon, the new SPLM candidate is Simon Kun Puoch.

Unless that election will not be free and fair, those corrupt SPLM candidates will not get any vote. we will all vote you out and bring those whom we know can serve the community. am happy that they came with Simon Kun Puoch. we will show him that people of Nasir are not monkeys as he call them. Now is our time to kick him out in a bright day light. that fake selection of SPLM will not work down there.

I think SPLM political bureau are seems to be working against some communities in the South otherwise if not that then Malong would have not came back against as a candidate in the post of governor while there is most qualified General who have applied for that post. I wish SPLM political bureau would have gave this chance to General Dau Aturjong to come and contestants against other parties in order to out weigh the capacity of his leadership. Therefore, since the primary election was done by the committee and they were drown like that i hope they could have convinced Malong not to contest insteady release to General Dau to contest as an independeantly candidate. We the people of greater Aweil are not happy with the move which was made by the president of South Sudan. He should have not gave his vote to malong because he is not within the committee and those whom were supposed to cast in their votes are the members of that committee. This is unacceptable and we can term it up as an inerference in some one his job. Dau and Malong are the sons of this area and they are our important people of which no can be denial not to rule in this state and this is what is going to happen now since Mr. president has sticked at one person in the state. Shame on Salva Kiir and hell to his good boy.

    Dear readers ,

I am thin doubting in this SPLM Bureau dicision , I know Peopl can ,t get delicouse Oportunity in SPLM Paty ,majority fought for Liberation and freedom since it happened If you know that you fought for the position than forget about it and try to think in other way arround ,SPLM is recognise and being recognised and is going to be recognising no way that you can pip your eye to go through , the CPA is already signed and no more fighting will be continue as known by the current SPLM commanders on power and if they know war has no end than there is need for consideration of emarginalise people .

Kiir should recruit back all his Commanders to the army posts for Command and not for citizen ,the governorship position supposed to be given to civilian not for Commanders ,

If you focus on results, you will never change
and If you focus on change, you will get results”

This is so shit!!! The only option is to replace him with Riek after referendum. I haven’t seen any government so tribal like GOSS! Time is up!! The so called political bearuea has nothing unique rather than a group of some gangs who are trying to set up a robbing company.
