SPLM political bureau endorses candidacy of Deng Arop for Abyei chief administrator

January 17, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — SPLM Political Bureau members have, after heated debates comparing scores allocated to each of the aspiring candidates, concluded to endorse the candidacy of Deng Arop Kuol over Deng Haar or Edward Lino for Abyei chief administrator.

Edward Lino, who scored 106 marks nex to Deng Arop’s 76 marks, was persuaded to contest for the Khartoum State gubernatorial chair against the ruling party’s nominee. Lino, however, said that the Political Bureau has been unfair and dominated by his foes including President Kiir with whom he does not get along.
Deng Haar, who also had 106 marks and was passed over without explanation, also questioned the use of Electoral College whose results are meant to serve as the primary recommendation from which the Political Bureau should endorse.

“If they knew they were going to pick individuals from well-connected circles as their favorite candidates and not through popularity one has in the region, why form the [state] electoral committee?” posed Haar.

In an interview with Sudan Tribune, a senior member of the political bureau, Mark Nyipuoc, said various committees were formed and each was tasked with looking into personalities and previous achievement of each candidate in the area. Nyipuoc too was passed over for the candidacy in Bahr el Ghazal candidacy, and he says is name never appeared for consideration.

“For Edward Lino, I was not in the committee which resolved to recommend him to run for Khartoum State gubernatorial chair. I was in the committee tasked with looking into issues pertaining to nomination lists for parliamentary candidates,” he said.

He called upon Lino to embark on an immediate campaign strategy saying Khartoum is bigger than Abyei. “SPLM supporters are not found only in the South but also in the North including Khartoum state,” he said.

He also congratulated those whose candidacies have been endorsed, encouraging them to give no chance to running candidates from the other political parties but to commit their efforts and resources to make it possible to win the next general elections.

In the future we need more credible way of selecting candidates to run on the SPLM tickets. Using disgruntled members of the party to work as an electoral college will diminish the credibility of the party. The selection process needs to be done through the grass-root vote.
