Sudan to mobilize efforts to raise aid locally for Haiti earthquake
January 19, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government is working on mobilizing efforts locally in order to send aid to Haiti and one official here called it an “obligation” to extend help.
Sudan official news agency (SUNA) reported that a meeting was held on Tuesday evening for the Sudanese high level committee to support the people of Haiti headed by the state minister for humanitarian affairs Abdel-Baki Al-Gailani.
Al-Gailani expressed support to the work of the committee stressing that assisting Haitians “is now an obligation” calling for the aid to be through “pure” Sudanese efforts and in the name of Sudan.
A major earthquake of magnitude 7 hit the impoverished country of Haiti last week and Haitian officials say the death toll from the quake was likely to be between 100,000 and 200,000. A massive worldwide relief effort is underway spearheaded by the United States which sent thousands of troops to maintain security and facilitate aid distribution.
The Sudanese official also urged humanitarian organizations to contribute to this campaign so that it becomes an all inclusive effort. The committee is planning on contacting students, youth and women unions to take part in the aid campaign as well as Sudanese Red Crescent.
A meeting will be held next week to follow up on what was decided by the committee, SUNA said.

Sudan to mobilize efforts to raise aid locally for Haiti earthquake
Haiti needs our help, Sudanese and African Union in general, this people even their government is not functioning only being blindly mislead by other countries. A Humanitarian plane from Sudan should be send to Haiti with at least 10 to 20 humanitarian workers, that will be our contribution to them to join the other worldwide rescue initiative going on.
