Over 240 participants attend peace conference in Aweil

January 22, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Some 240 participants from both Dinka Malual of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state and Reizigat from war ravaged region of South Darfur started a week long participatory conference in Aweil town.

The conference will discuss peaceful co-existence between the two pastoralist communities as well as other issues of common concern. A high level delegation representing Government of Southern Darfur has arrived Aweil town this evening.

Garang Diing Akuong, head of the preparatory committee, confirmed receipt of 240 participants from both sides adding more participants are still arriving to the capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

“This is an open conference and attendance is expected to be high, he said. So far, we have only received 240 participants and reception committee is still receiving messages giving names of participants from all over the country where community experts are expected to attend.”

He said participants come from Khartoum, Darfur and Juba.

However, he said they could not have started on Friday as planned because key speakers and presenters came later this evening. We only gave handouts and timings for participants who have already arrived; he said adding that the conference will be officially opened tomorrow Saturday 23.

A reconciliation conference between the Malual-Dinka and Rizeigat tribes has long been discussed and planed by the two governors in their previous gubernatorial meeting held twice this year in both Aweil and Nyala.

No specific numbers of participants were agreed as it is open conference between the tribes.

This conference between Dinka- Malual and Reizigat tribe of Drafur is excellence decision. The Reizigat must be aware that they have made alot of distruction during the North-South war against Dinka- Malual.
In fact, these Darfurian must the mistreatment that Bashier impose against them is one of the reason we were fighting the Khartoum governement.
I hope that you people of Darfur should work together at this time because you guys have been our enemy by then. Anyway, i hope you guys wake up on how NCP treated you. I hope those of Darfur learned for NCP,they are hanging your people now and then and kiling your civilians and burn down your huts every single day.
