Another SPLM senior official declares independent candidacy for governorship

January 24, 2010 (BENTIU, Unity State) – Another senior official of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has declared her independent candidacy to contest in the upcoming April elections for the position of governor in the oil rich Unity state.

The state Minister of Energy and Mining in the Government of National Unity and member of the SPLM National Liberation Council, Angelina Jany Teny, on Saturday declared her intention to contest as an independent candidate for the position of governor in the state.

Angelina Teny made the announcement in the state’s capital, Bentiu, just two days after another senior party official and advisor to the Southern Sudan President, Alfred Ladu Gore, declared his independent candidacy for governorship in Central Equatoria state on Thursday.

Gore whose nomination was turned down in favor of the incumbent governor, Clement Wani Konga, criticized the selection by the SPLM Political Bureau describing the decision as “unpopular” among the people. He added that his decision would also save the SPLM from losing popularity in the state.

Angelina said her decision came as a response to the continuous calls by the people of Unity state who yearn for better leadership.

She said in the next few days she would make public her envisioned program for the betterment of the state.

The Energy and Mining minister will contest against the incumbent governor Taban Deng Gai who is the official party’s selected candidate for the position as well as against the National Congress Party’s candidate, Paul Lily.

Governor Taban Deng was nominated by the Political Bureau last week, giving him the chance to defeat his state political rival, Southern Sudan minister of Health Dr. Joseph Minytuil Wijang.

Dr. Wijang defeated governor Taban during the SPLM grassroots elections in 2008 in the state and became the party’s state chairman. He won Electoral College nomination contest the upcoming April election.

Angelina is the wife of the Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar Teny and she originally hails from the same constituency with Governor Taban Deng Gai.

SPLM Political Bureau nominated its candidates for various constituencies last week. However, discontented voices say most of the process did not put into consideration the choices of the people in the constituencies concerned.

Tut Samuel, a member of Angelina’s campaign team who organized a press conference she addressed today in Bentiu, said, “Madam Teny made a wonderful and truth touching statement prompting rural poor majority inhabiting the town of Bentiu to endorse her candidacy without question.”

“Her address outlining proposals of her future government to all unity state citizens made a unique candidate with a clear interest to develop Unity State,” he further said.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) extended the deadline for submission of applications for candidacy from Friday, 22nd January to Wednesday, 27th January 2010.

According to the Electoral Law, the Commission after the deadline will sit and go through the qualifications of the candidates and see if the requirements are met.

A period is also to be given to the citizens in all the constituencies to file any complaints and appeal against candidates they disapprove of.

Based on the law requirements, the Commission shall approve the candidacy of applicants who have met all the requirements and reject the candidates that have not met the requirements.

Applications from Southern Sudan constituencies will first pass through the Southern Sudan High Elections Committee in Juba for scrutiny before submitting them to the NEC headquarters in Khartoum.

After the candidates are filtered the Commission would then publish the final names of candidates and they become ready for the election campaigns and the polling day.

Any candidate rejected by the Commission can launch an appeal against the decision in the Constitutional Court, and the decision reached by the Court shall be final.

This is what I always expect from the government of South Sudan, equal opportunity for woman and man must be our highest priority. We canot judge people by their look like how empty mind invdividuals has tried. Imagine we have Anna Itto, Sabina, Kumba and many more from Greater Equatorians ladies in the parliament, that is a clear signal of democratic. Thefore it is time for Kuol to allow more ladies to the window of John Garang. Democracy means freedom of expression, speech and exercise. How would you prove your starting point of democracy if your state parliament has zero female representative? Dinkas Boy and his father Kuol and other Jonglei ministers need to undergo political briefting in order to let one of them understand “equal opportunity and gender balance”

If we could go back to history, those ladies we are denying from leadership where the ones who feed us during the struggle, walking up at 3am to cook, collect water and firewood in order to prepared some food for South Sudan liberators. Why don’t you think back Mr dinkas boy? are you really mature enough to utter such words against our talented young contestant? It is not about her beauty or whatsoever, we need her knowledge and proper mangement of the state and South Sudan in particular. Its premature to judge a thing by its look, how small is a bullet to kill an elephant. My friend you better reverse your mind and talk wise like a concern man, otherwise your hatred on other communities will never let you breath in a free and fair enviornment.

New Year Message continuous to inspire

Time for tribalism has gone, its new year 2010 which is not a time to generalise tribe or community instead of one person. It is time to focus on the real issue far from tribal criticism, political party criticism, leaders criticism, and very far from abuses or insults. We should also debate far from abuses of any single commenter on ST forum, to myself I want to be a man of tolerance, peace, responsbility, respect, forgiveness, love, unity and courage . It is time to get serious and work for the betterment of my nation South Sudan Democratic Republic of Victoria, South Sudan should be call Victoria, because the long struggle is victory, CPA is victory, South Sudan liberation is victory, our insecurity will be a victory, election and referrendom are potential victories. South Sudan future source of hydro electricity power is White nile which has its source at Lake Victoria, unqestionable the name fits.

I didn’t change myself because of pressure or whatsoever, it could be my 2010 resolution. Sometimes you don’t expect the public to pay their attention on you.Brave man conquers the fear like I did previously. However I come to realised that, I am not truly free if I am taking away and abusing someone else’s freedom of expression and speech, just as I am not free when my freedom is taken from me and been abused. This is why I finally come to reason that, me and the rest of concern Southerns will transformed South Sudan into a country that is not comfortable place for those who opposed to democracy, parliamentary law, parliamentary debate, independent and fair courts. For now lets start new year with fresh mind and positive ideas that will improvement the managment of South Sudan, childish comments must be ignored. Some individual comment aggressively when they are defeated in debate, this spirit must be abandon. We are here to play a game ie you get defeated or you defeat others defends on the article and the extend of your debate, but don’t insult people. This is my new year inspiring message to ST viewers, contributors, pseuds, readers and editor. Finally if you come across a mistake or opposing view, please address it with dignity.

    To the undemocratic Dinka intellectuals,

To the contrary this shows that the Nuer are more advanced in practicing democratic ideals as the British writers describe them in the books as “people with very deep democracy.”

The Nuer do not always kneel down to the idiot ’Beny’ all the time like the Dinka.

    Comrades,

It is her constitutional right to run independently but she have to resign from her position as a state minister energy. Folks, comrade Angelina is no longer Riek Machar wife but ex-wife. She is a single mother who thinks independently when it comes to politic. Angelina is wise political thinker who was unlucky married to greedy genocidal. Riek left her for old white woman.
