Sudanese foreign minister Alor ‘under siege’: report

January 27, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese foreign minister Deng Alor has distanced himself from the media and is rarely making any statement to the press, the independent Al-Sahafa newspaper reported today.

Al-Sahafa said that Alor who is a leading figure in the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) has been “under siege” media-wise through the ministry spokesperson Mua’wiya Osman Khalid.

Furthermore, no interview can be held with Alor without the consent and participation of the spokesperson, the newspaper added.

Last year multiple sources told Sudan Tribune that the SPLM chairman and the First Vice President Salva Kiir has instructed the party figures who are holding cabinet posts not to try and resist control by the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) officials in their respective ministries.

Alor has had an uneasy relation with his deputies Ali Karti and Mutrif Sideeg who in many cases bypassed him and carried out his functions and made decisions without consulting with him.

The foreign minister has been frequently absent from official travels abroad of president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir as of late and no official explanation has been made. It was announced today that he will head Sudan delegation to Addis Ababa for the African Union (AU) ministerial preparatory summit meeting.

Alor has been outspoken in his resistance to NCP’s hegemony over the foreign policy and has made statements on the issue of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that infuriated his NCP peers as well as Bashir.

Many observers believe that Kiir has no interest in issues relating to foreign policy and is more focused on the upcoming 2011 referendum in which the Southerners will decide if they want to have their own state.

It is widely expected that the South will vote overwhelmingly in favor of secession.

NCP wants to rule Sudan my any means, they do not respect south sudanese porfolios within the power sharing agreements which puts the foreign ministry within southern share of the government of national unity, that is the reasont hey were given the finance ministry and the energy, because they insisted they want those ministry, then the south took the foreign ministry, but now they are trying to force themselves into the foreign ministry forgeting their limits, however let them do whatever they want, it is almost over now, let NCP stick to the north and SPLM to the south, as they NCP just mentioned today that they support kirr’s nomination, so let them support SPLM in the south and they will also get support from southerners for their positions in the north, the problem why SPLM cannot form coalition with northern opposition after Juba groups agreement, the northern opposition cannot be trusted and they are very weak when it comes to taking difficult decisions compared to NCP.

It is not Alor alone, The culture of such leadership exist here in South, Since Alor has clear background it is obvious. Alor is happy with is life and career whether under dictatorship of bashir or not he is happy. The same that in South people are not happy for their corruption to appear in the media. Where is Isaac vuni who was active in reporting evil activities? Whenever any GOSS minister is having luxurious time in his career, He will distance himself from media, sometimes presenting his lips but the whole view is being conceal. Money his become the only tool that motivate current ministers in GOSS. But my advice to people like Alor who work beside GOSS enemy should spy the activities and reveal them to GOSS. ALl the relationship of NCP with arab nations would have been in his presents. But guess what!

Someone pointed it right, SPLM has a marginal culture of its own. If Alor corporate with NCP over programs of GONU, he will be duped as ‘traitor’ like his predecessor, Dr Lam. If he doesn’t, he concieved as not doing his job with the motive of separatist overshadowing his role in GONU. This dilemma is what exactly what cost Dr Lam his job as FM on SPLM-ticket.
