By Philip Thon Aleu

January 31, 2010 (BOR) – It is now official that three candidates, including incumbent Gov. Kuol Manyang Juuk, are contesting for Jonglei gubernatorial post.

300 citizens had applied to contest in April polls in Jonglei for executive (governorship) and legislative levels of elections but NEC nominated 298 and rejects 2 candidates.

Of the 298, unopposed 2 SPLM candidates are declared elected.

National Election Commission (NEC) listed Kuol Manyang Juuk (SPLM), Joseph Duer Jakok (NCP) and George Athor Deng Dot (Independent) as vying to head South Sudan largest state. Incumbent Gov. Kuol Manyang Juuk was appointed by South Sudan President in 2007. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, or SPLM, rules the semi-autonomous south following 2005 peace deal that ended 2 decades of civil war between mainly north and south. April elections are part of the 2005 peace accord, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

There are 91 legislative positions for three assemblies; National (Khartoum), Southern Sudan (Juba) and State (Bor). This implies that the 298 candidates – except unopposed Atem Garang Deng (Twic East, SPLM) and Francis Lokurunga (Pibor, SPLM), will have to convince voters to be elected for governorship or legislative positions.

Meanwhile south Sudan opposition party – United Democratic Front (UDF) lost two candidates after NEC rejected their applications. James Agut Bureth and Esbon Oleo Nyapir have a week to appeal NEC decision.

THE WINER FOR JONGLEI STATE GOVERNORSHIP WILL BE Mr. Kuol Manyang Juuk for his second term.

Governor Kuol Manyang will win his second term compulsory, unless Mr. George Deng who is Independent has a high popularity in Dinka Bors Community than Kuol Manyang Juuk.

Then, if recheal Nyadak paul who has higher popularity in Three counties of Lounuer Community,is standing behind Joseph Duer Jakok, then Mr. Joseph Duer Jakok can be next governor of Jonglei State. If not Mr. Kuol Manyang is the only one.

    Thanks
