Kenya supports Southern Sudan self-determination referendum – Odinga

February 4, 2010 (NAIROBI) — The Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has urged the international community to support a referendum to be held next year on southern Sudan self-determination adding Kenya is committed to outcome of this popular consultation.

Odinga remarks supporting southern Sudan independence come following statements by the chiefs of the African Union, Jean Ping and the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon on the need to preserve Sudan’s unity.

Following a protest letter by the President of southern Sudan government to the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon, the UN said Ban was supporting efforts to make unity attractive.

“I strongly urge the entire international community to pursue a similar course and offer maximum assistance in implementing the referendum’s outcome, whatever it might be,” said Raila on Wednesday.

He emphasized that Kenya was fully committed to and would respect the outcome of the self determination referendum, whether it favors maintaining unity or creation of an independent state in southern Sudan.

The Kenyan Prime Minister said the AU and UN stand would undermine the principle of peaceful resolution of disputes of which the CPA is an outstanding example globally. “Having done so much to advance this historic process of self-determination, it is preposterous that anyone would seek a pre-determined outcome in the referendum,” he added.

Raila called on the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which sponsored the peace process hosted at the time Kenyan government to take lead in the ensuring the implementation of the CPA.

“IGAD was familiar with all the issues concerning the CPA and was in a better position to resolve outstanding issues such border demarcations at the oil-rich Abyei region and the population census process.”

Excellent response PM Raila Odinga! These so-called world powers are equivocating over the implementation of CPA. Part of that implementation is a referendum whereby Southerners will determine whether they want to remain part of the Sudan. This is a decision to be made by Southerners and not outside personalities or organizations that have failed to protect people in Darfur.

Kenya was the only country that never hesitated about the threat posed by Khartoum. It will remain our closest ally in the region.

That is very Excellent Speech from Mr. Prime Minister Raila Odingo!!!
That is exactly the speech of someone who had seen and experienced the suffering of the Southerners during the war periods. Beyond no doubt, Mr. Raila speech is very realistic, indeed he had witnessed the suffering because Kenyan was one of the countries where Southern Sudanese were resettled for refuge, therefore, the international community could use such experience during the Referendum but not listening and not considering those who have just been hearing the histories and using the Referendum to protect their leaderships like The African Union Commission chief, Jean Ping Mr. Pingu who had never engaged in Sudanese suffering before he could become under designed title know nothing about Sudanese political scenarios.
Thank Mr. Prime Minister Raila Odinga and thank to Kenya nation for the concerned

Hi Son of Jeromogi Oginga Odinga!

That is it, Bwana Raila Odinga Oginga, you have really spoken like a wise man and not just like the empty-headed UN chief. You are a true “sun of Kenya and possiblely be to Africa at large.” We shall make a good neighbours. Thank you and keep on telling those power thurst thugs to change before the worst change come to change them for bad.

We are left with ten months (10) to have our Democratic Republic of Sudan (DRS). that is the name I personally propose. The old Sudan shall just be called Undemocratic Republic of Sudan(URS) There who have another proposal of the new child’s name?

    Be blessed,

Deng Akol Agut-tungduon, a man far away from tribalism.

    Tank you Raila Odinga

You are a true African son and you stand tall without betraying African values and freedom. Your efforts and the efforts of president Mwai Kibaki have been noted by the people of South Sudan. Kenya has been standing with the southerners for a very long time, there are other countries who have now deviated from the course and changed their colours at the last minutes to side with Arabs against southerners, the referendum is part of the agreement which is internationally recognized, but other countries have decided to fall for Arab money, we know this countries and we will keep our eyes on them, when south sudan gets it independence we do not want to see this fake countries running to try and grab resources and mineral investments, it will only go to th ose who deserve it. Kenya is a country of principles and is committed to international agreements and freedom. All African countries should follow the example of Kenya.
