China wary of ICC genocide ruling against Sudan president

February 5, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Chinese government today expressed concern over the possible impact of the International Criminal Court (ICC) ruling made this week that paves the way for adding the charges of genocide to the arrest warrant issued against Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir.

Ma_Zhaoxu.jpg“We do not want such a move to further complicate the settlement of the Darfur issue and the peace between the North and South (of Sudan),” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement carried by Agence France Presse (AFP).

“Such a move might disturb or even damage the cooperative atmosphere between concerned sides,” he said.

On Wednesday the ICC judges ruled in a favor of the appeal made by prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in which he challenged the pre-trial chamber decision to throw out the genocide counts from Bashir’s warrant.

The warrant when issued almost a year ago drew condemnation from Sudan’s allies in the Arab and African world as well as China, all of which called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to defer it under Article 16 of the Rome Statute.

However, China has lately become less vocal on the matter despite being a UNSC permanent member. Chinese officials have said they do not intend to table a resolution imposing a freeze on the indictment.

Currently, the situation in Sudan is at a “complex, sensitive and critical” stage as the largest African country is to hold general elections in April and a referendum on self-determination for south Sudan is slated for January 2011, Ma said.

“Concerned sides are also trying to pushing forward the Doha peace talks,” Ma said.

Beijing abstained from voting on the UNSC resolution in 2005 referring the Darfur case to the ICC much to the dismay of Khartoum.

Sudan does not recognize the ICC calling it a tool of “western neo-colonialism”.

Dear money minded or oil minded Chinas in Sudan.

I would like to inform you that Bashire must go and it won’t affect Darfur or CPA as you put it.It was an agreement signed by the Late Dr.Garang but when he died in 2005;CPA never died with. Why not Bashire. He must go and defend himself if he thinks that whatever being said against him is an allegation.

What I know so far,the man is just defending Bashire indirectly because of oil in Sudan. My dear money mined in China, make sure that if you have not taken enough oil in Sudan during the war then you will never get it again.

    Mr. Chinese Spokesperson

Unfortunately your government in its search for fuel is on record for supporting the wrong leaderships and worse regimes worldwide.

You actively supported and helped this incumbent regime of Omer al Bashir first to eliminate and displace a big number of south Sudanese from their ancestral lands in the Unity state in the 1990s. You even committed genocide there.

You provided al Bashir with the arms that sent him crazy and committed those atrocities in Darfur.

Now you still support your stooge despite the fact that you are always turning a blind eye to his wrong doings and you are also not willing to prevent him from committing more atrocities.

However your position is well understood, even by Sudanese standards. You will never use your veto at the UNSC to block this genocide charge as that will taint you with one big bad image once and for all.

The only acceptable way an accused criminal can promote justice is to cooperate with the court of law.

The so-called African hibred courts of Mbeki are just not going to translate into any realities on the ground. After all its not going even to investigate al Bashir, the architect of the genocide campaign.

Justice delayed is justice denied, and to the Haig al Bashir must go!

Chinese should distance them self from supporting the genocidaire Elbachir to face alone his fate and face the justice. The arrest of Elbashir will accelerate the peaceful solution not only Darfur problem but whole Sudan’s problematique. Since Elbashir is responsible for perpetrating the genocide and ethnic cleaning against the desperate civilian in Darfur. The Chinese support Elbashir to continue stealing depleting country resources through weakened NCP… let elbashir running for the forthcoming election means a historical mistake by the international community as well as the Sudanese people .. giving more chance for killer means more genocide against the people of the Sudan ..

Mr. Ma Zhaoxu, I don’t know if I should call you a spokesman or a spokeswoman. You the Chinese have done enough damage in Sudan and particularly to the South. How would you as a developed nation, a permanent member of the united Nations Security Council defend someone who have committed genocide? I would like to let you know Mr. Ma Zhaoxu that ICC ruling is not a mistake. There are proofs that President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir has committed crimes and he deserves to be brought to justice.
If you don’t have anything to write on the media, then you rather stay away than making comments that doesn’t help bring the solutions to the situation in Sudan.
His comment quote “Such a move might disturb or even damage the cooperative atmosphere between concerned sides” Which sides are you talking about. I think he needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. He is probably suffering from Chinesesim and luck of human rights in china.

We have learned how painful Bashir’s indictment is to other Oil minded countries like China. Everytime Beshir’s case is brought to the table, China reacts negatively just because it does not care about the people of Southern Sudan but its natural resources. We know that over half of African countries are rallying behind China to support them in their development endeavours.

We the generation of this age are more aware of the second colonial regimes on the way towards recolonization of many poor African countries including Sudan.
Development can not come from outside but from within. If we believe or think development needs an outside input, who did the developed countries seek to assist them develop? Our local expertise, resources and skills can take us further than what we are trying to get from outsiders. This notion of development has ruined us up and left us open to many conditions. European colonization is gone but left behind poverty, now we are seeking another colonization from other third world or undeveloped countries like China which is struggling for the survival of its citizens and finding new resources for its people to survive.

Why is Beshir more important to China than lates Ibrahim Aboud and Gaafar Nimeri? The answer is that during the reign of Aboud and Nimeri, oil and other natural resources were not discovered in Sudan, therefore, China was not very much concerned about Sudan. The issue of China being concerned about Sudan’s president is to protect their interest not the interests of Sudanese people in particular South Sudan where the natural resources are found.

China must keep away from Sudan’s problems and other African countries which have already rallied behind China should stop from direct involvement in Sudan’s problems by acting blindly or supporting the oil hungry country of China.

I live in the western world and have visited many underdeveloped countries including China. The facts are that each and every country in this planet have their beliefs, norms, languages, culture etc through which they build on and develop from. We know that culture is not static and culture can change from time to time, but we also know that when one’s culture totally wiped out it will ruined up the people as they struggle to adopt to the new culture. If we think China can do better things for us, that means we accepted another era of colonization and giving out our own resources to be used to ruin us up. If we all agree that our culture is what we made and what we can rely on, then there is no need to listen to China or cooperate with them.

The countries that aspire to be future super powers are seeking allies everywhere especially from poor countries like Sudan. China has been building up its military equipment from resources it reaped from other poor countries and these resources have been used to destroy the people from those countries. During the two decades of civil war in Sudan, China have contributed largerly to the displacement and death of thousands of local people from the rich oil areas in Southern Sudan and we all are aware of this and many of us have witnessed the atrocities that have taken place in Southern Sudan with our naked eyes.
If China needs to continue to conduct business with Sudan, it must cooperate with the international court of criminals to bring changes to the nation but not to support criminals like Beshir.

Beshir will go and all Sudanese will go but the oil will never follow Beshir instead Beshir will follow the oil and get added to it.
