UNAMID head travels to Doha for talks on peace in Darfur

February 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Joint Special Representative (JSR) of the African Union and the United Nations, Ibrahim Gambari will travel to Doha on Monday for talks with the chief mediator of Darfur peace process and the Qatari officials.

The newly appointed head of the hybrid peacekeeping operation, Gambari, recently described the UNAMID as “the first mission where you have a peacekeeping mission without peace to keep”. He further added that making peace in Darfur tops his priorities.

Ibrahim Qmbary will head to the Qatari capital Doha to meet with Mr. Djibril Bassole the Joint Chief mediator, and Qatari government officials in charge of Darfur file, along with holding consultations with representatives of Darfur movements present in Doha to complete consultations initiated with senior officials in the Sudan, said Noureddine Mezni, the official UNAMID spokesperson.

UNAMID priorities, as established by the new JSR “will focus on enhancing the security of civilians and internally displaced people in Darfur; continuing to provide proactive support to the ongoing peace process; and assisting in the normalization of relations between Chad and the Sudan.”

Noureddine told Sudan Tribune that Gambari work plan has been welcomed and supported by all parties he met on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa last week.

During his visit to the Ethiopian capital, Gambari met with the UN Secretary General, AU commission chairperson, Ethiopian Prime Minister, and a number of special envoys to Sudan including US Scott Gration, also he had met in Khartoum before his departure to the African summit with head of the AU high level panel on Darfur, Thabo Mbeki.

The head of the UNAMID said he wants to coordinate between the Joint Chief Mediator and the former South Africa president who seeks a holistic solution for Sudan problems.

Sudanese President was last Thursday in Doha where he stressed Sudan’s support to the mediation hosted by the Gulf country to end the seven year conflict. The mediation is conducting currently consultations between the rebel groups over unity issue before to engage direct talks.
