Ethiopia: Over 4,000 Eritrean soldiers deserted in a year

February 18, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) — Administration for Refugees and Returnees Affairs (ARRA) in its refugees status report said that in 2009, a total of 11,653 Eritreans have fled borders to Ethiopia in protest to the “unfolding suppression” they are facing by the Eritrean government.

ARRA said 4,131 of the total figure above are Eritrean soldiers and the rest from all walks of life, considerable number being mothers and children

Current influx of Eritreans is at 2,114 a month according to the latest report, almost 4 fold from 2008.

Total Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia (counted till January 1, 2010) have reached 45,200 that is double from that of 2008, making a-third of the total 133,000 refugees Currently Ethiopia shelters from neighboring countries.

Eritrean refugees are currently being sheltered in 4 camps near the borders to Eritrea. The two – Shimelba and Mai-Aini – being in Tigray region and the other two in Asayta and Berahle camps in the Afar region.

According to the United Nations, the tiny red sea nation with a population of 5 million makes one of the highest numbers of refugees of any country not at war.

    this stupid floks they diserve this some yers ago the choosed to be servant of Isayas they hate to be ethiopian. but Afar must be part of Afar region of ethiopia I’m very happy to see when this floks punished.Here in ethiopia relatively we have freedom to live in our cauntry but this crazy floks they diseve this truly.
