February 18, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has on Thursday 18, confirmed rescheduling Yasir Saeed Arman’s visit to the Southern State of Northern Bahr el Ghazal for talks with a leader and senior members of the independent candidates.

Arman’s delegation was previously reported to have included Nyandeng de Mabior and Deng Alor for talks with independent candidates who showed no intentions to reconsider stepping down from running upcoming elections against official nominees.

But the SPLM political bureau amid concerns and fears of possible defeat of its nominees, by independent groups, who seems to have garnered local support across the region, took its final decision on Wednesday 17 disowning membership of the candidates saying abiding by its earlier decision which endorsed nomination of officials it has made known to the public in January.

“There was nothing the leadership could do apart from sticking to the position it has earlier made known to the public,” said Angelina Kuc who works as SPLM public relations officer in the Northern Sector.

“Some people may be tempted to say decision taken by the SPLM is detrimental and unwise but I believe this was the only option,” she adds.

In Aweil town, General Dau Aturjong, who stands as independent candidate for gubernatorial post against incumbent governor Paul Malong Awan welcomed Arman plan to visit the area.

“I welcome Yasir Seaad Arman and members of his delegation visit to Aweil either for talks with us or for his electoral campaign, he said adding this visit would be another opportunity for Mading Aweil people to hear and share their concerns with the SPLM leadership.

“We will support them (in reference to Arman and President of the government of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit) to wins upcoming elections without reservations,” Dau said stressing he support no changes to SPLM vision.

Observers fear that SPLM decision to disown the independent candidates in southern Sudan could affect SPLM runner for Sudan president Yasir Arman who seemingly generating significant support in northern Sudan.

The general who challenge popularity of the incumbent governor draws support from composite groups cropping from different walks of life in the area.

He has also won support of prominent members of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State including traditional and spiritual leaders.

The first post CPA governor, Joseph Mareng Akuei Ajou became the first figure to publicly voice out his support to him saying peaceful transfer of power has always been a desire of Mading Aweil people.

Perhaps, the SPLM presidential flag-bearer will manage to dissuade the independent candidates, though I remain highly skeptical about a possibility of reversing their decision. Mr. Arman should preach the importance of unity among South Sudanese since this seems to be a lacking ingredient in the South Sudanese’s sauce. And probably, it is the reason why we look like a collection of individuals who are incapable of coming together. I strongly advise those who are running on their mother’s tickets to join any of the political parties as they wait for their chances to vie for their desired positions of service.

Since a decision has already been made to dismiss independent candidates, i do not see any reasons why Yasser Arman should visit NBG state to talk with independent candidates, we do not want to move backward all the time, the decisions has been made and that is it, the dismissed candidates can be readmitted after elections or they can form their own parties. Arman can however visit NBG state to campaign for the presidency, that is reasonable and would not be waste of time.
