SPLM-DC members released after alleged detention in South Sudan

March 9, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – SPLM-DC, the only party with a candidate standing against the incumbent president of South Sudan in the upcoming April polling, announced today that a number of members were freed in South Sudan today after the secretary-general complained about the detentions on Sudan Television.

Five people said to be SPLM-DC supporters were headed in two cars to Northern Bahr El Ghazal state when they were arrested by security forces on the state border on February 28. They were reportedly transporting elections materials. This incident is among a number of other harassments alleged by SPLM-DC including arrest of party operatives in Juba and tearing of posters in Malakal.

Charles Kisanga, secretary-general, thanked Sudan TV for organizing a programme on the topic, and credited his TV appearance with prompting the release, he said in a press statement today. He related that his driver, Daudi Abdalla, said the detainees were freed this morning without money or a phone to give the information straight away.

“The SPLM-DC seized cars were also are said to have been used by the SPLM for their own election campaigning,” Kisanga said citing the detained party members as his source. “All our material were dumped on the ground and they took our cars for their election workers for the last nine days. Also the security forces seized personal properties of the SPLM-DC people and drivers.”

The party sent some money to their supporters to enable them to buy some food and slippers, since even their shoes had been stolen. “Further our people say the security forces lashed them daily with 51 strokes until yesterday and all their bodies are soar with pain. All the money on the people was confiscated by the security forces. All their mobile phones were also confiscated. In few a words the people were stripped bare and allowed only the bare minimum to cover their bodies,” said Kisanga.

One of the cars is now damaged beyond being usable, and had to be towed to Aweil at the party’s expense.

The SPLM-DC Secretary General said that he condemns the inhuman treatment of the party’s people by the security forces in Southern Sudan: “If they want seize election material then seize them without torturing fellow brothers and sisters.”

    Mr Kasanga,

SPLM-DC is wasting spare time complaining for nothing.
South Sudanese remember DR Lam Akol very well;therefore, we are not worried for him in any sort of forthcoming elections.

If you still talking nonesense about SPLM then our SPLM-DC members will be more detained along with Dr Akol. Unless you respect SPLM in the South and you will be save to make comgaing without intimidation.
