Bashir and Kiir converge in Wau to inaugurate railway

By James Gatdet Dak

March 10, 2010 (JUBA) – Leaders of the Sudan’s ruling parties that signed the North-South peace deal five years ago are in Wau, the state capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal, to inaugurate a railway line that connects northern and southern Sudan.

President Omer Al-Bashir (L) First Vice President Salva Kiir in Malakal on January 9, 2009 (ST)

President Omer Hassen al-Bashir of Sudan and his deputy and President of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit arrived Wau on Wednesday for Thursday’s inauguration ceremony.

The old railway, which will resume its function for the first time after the war, had recently finished reconstruction or repair and its inauguration is seen as a campaigning bit for the two incumbent presidents who also campaign as flag bearers for their respective parties at different levels of government. Bashir is contesting for presidential seat at the national level while Kiir contests for the post of Southern Sudan president.

Kiir returned to Juba from Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday where he participated in the 14th IGAD Summit before proceeding to Western Bahr el Ghazal.

He is expected to visit a number of Southern Sudan states this week during his campaign for the elections.

Bashir was in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state early this week where he reportedly secured the support of the Caretaker governor of the state who called on the citizens to vote for him [Bashir] in the presidential race.

Last week he also toured the three states of Greater Equatoria, namely Central, Eastern and Western Equatoria states and expected to visit a number of other states of Greater Bahr el-Ghazal this week.

For railway to be effective in contributing to development, it must be extended to all corners of South. What is so important in Wau that cannot be found in Juba? Railway must reach Bor, Juba, and Kapoeta and on to Kenya for it to help South and Sudan in general.

NCP is just using these gimmicks to fool shallow-minded southerners into getting a false sense of development.

Why President Bashir interested in Southern Sudan and leave Northern Sudan. If we southern Sudanese are not seriously with Al-Bashir compaign, he may fool all of us and later we can vote for him.

Remember, some families are not called now in Darfur, Eastern Sudan and even Southern Sudan because of Bashir Dictatorship policies, so, if can reason very well, then we should not let Bashir open his mouth to talk.
Bashir can make many promises to Sudanese people, and these promises will take thousands of centuries to fulfil the promises. Politicians can build many bridges where there are no rivers.

How many years do Bashir stay in power and there were no such kind of development, railway were there and it were destroys by Bashir regime. He promise to construct three universities in Equatoria alone, what bout parts of the country, or Bashir is only president of Equatoria. Am an equatorian but such statements should never be tolerated because we equatorian are only people who like Bashir or Bashir is not our President.

Watch out My dear Southerners with Bashir statement.

Vote Yassir Arman, vote for your future.

This railway was build by the national unity fund which is money taken from borth south andnorth account to create connections between north and south, this is important as part of economic infrastructure, it is for business and transportation purpose only not for elections as many think, from the other hand this is only a symbolic public relation from Omber bashir but it will not nessecarily give him any support in the south, remember this railway has been build with the oil money from national fund from oil money shares, it has not been build by NCP money or northern money.
