Bassole hold talks with Darfur rebel chief in Paris

March 10, 2010 (PARIS) – The joint United Nations (UN) – African Union (AU) Chief Mediator Dijibril Bassole met yesterday with the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) chief Abdel-Wahid Al-Nur in the French capital for talks that focused primarily on the recent fighting in Jebel Marra.

Al-Nur told Sudan Tribune that Bassole urged him to facilitate the work of the AU-UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) particularly in light of the civilian casualties and displacement in the region that resulted from the clashes.

Sources at the UN said that hundreds of civilians were killed in the fighting which rebels say was initiated by the government. This week Khartoum said it took control of Jebel Marra despite earlier denials and claims that the SLM-AW were fighting among each other.

“I told brother Bassole that we want the UNAMID to have meaningful presence but this is not the case right now. Their mandate is very weak and they are unable to function and protect civilians” Al-Nur said.

“The Sudanese government launched a massive attack against us but they targeted water sources, bread storage places and schools. This is a deliberate work to drive civilians out of their homes and proves what we called on constantly. Stop the killing and extermination of civilians, establish security, disarm militias then we will not hesitate to join peace talks,” he added.

The SLM chief reiterated his previous demands related to civilian protection in response to a request that he join the Doha peace talks currently involving the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and other rebel groups.

Analysts say that Al-Nur, who enjoys popular support among IDPs, is crucial to any attempts to bring peace to the war ravaged region.

The rebel chief further accused certain parties of pressuring Bassole “for recreating the Abuja agreement and look for groups to sign a ceremonial accord that does nothing on the ground”.

He commended the work of the joint mediator saying that the latter has so far been able to fend off the pressure and “carry out his vision on how to resolve the conflict”.

On a related issue, the SLM leader accused the Sudanese government of playing a “divide and conquer” tactics in the area by fueling animosity among the Arab tribes which resulted in eruption of fighting over the last few weeks.

“The Arabs are joining the other IDPs in their camps after falling victims to the violence instigated by the regime. We call on them to stop the fighting and circumvent the plans of Khartoum” he said.

Clashes took place last week in West Darfur between the Misseriya and Nuwayba tribes killing scores of people as well as between Jammala and Bagara near Zalengi.

The United Nations estimates Darfur’s revolt has claimed 300,000 lives and forced more than 2 million to flee their homes since it began in 2003 when insurgents took up arms accusing central government of neglecting the remote region.

Why U.N. Making polite to Sudan ruler government.?

What is different between those Darfuri Rebels who signed fake peace agreement and those who are not signing one if the Sudan government is still fighting with other Darfuri Rebels now.? To me I think that peace agreement are meaningless to all Darfurian people, because this is how Sudan government have been using this dirty tactics to divided Black African Tribes in the Sudan by saying, you are a good person but this person is bad. Saying this Tribe is bad and you this Tribe you are good that is the way they get ride by single out other and fool you and later they get you back. Now Omar al Bashir is saying he will continuing fighting with other Darfuri and those who signs peace are okay which mean his government will get them later on one by one this is what it sound to me. I would like to remind all Darfurian people particular those went in to signed peace agreement with Sudan government. Peace agreement is good when your all problems have been accepted and with the world witness in your case, but if you just rush in now to sign peace agreement and Tomorrow like now you hear the same government is fighting with your brothers in Darfuri Jelebel Marria or Mountaint Marria. The question is, there any meaningful for peace agreement.? All Darfurian people must be logically when Sudan government is making everything gimmickable and please my dear thinks largerly why Sudan government still attacking your brothers in Darfuri. In your experience to your brothers of Southern Sudan who signed the peace agreement, Omar al Bashir’s government have been trying very hard to destroying every single move fortunately, it did not happen because the SPLM was another big government which have been establishing for two decades but yours will be different if you go to Khartoum then, you will probably hear it the word saying that, God brought them and I think that you do not want to accept this word forever.
