SPLM nominees urge Fangak to vote for peace implementation

By Philip Thon Aleu

March 11, 2010 (FANGAK, Jonglei) – Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) tells Fangak County in a campaign rally today Thursday to vote the party which is for “signatory to the CPA” but not “hyenas in goat skins.”

Speaking valiantly, the SPLM nominees for Jonglei State governorship and various legislative assemblies says voting for NCP or independent candidates will be southerners’ breaching of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed with Khartoum government five years ago.

The midday rally at primary school football field in New Fangak was attended by Southern Sudan minister for internal affairs Gier Chuang Aluong and Jonglei Gov. Kuol Manynag – both SPLM candidates in April elections as Pigi south geographical constituency and Jonglei gubernatorial posts respectively. Fangak Commissioner James Maliet, Jonglei SPLM general secretary Buoth Chuol and all SPLM legislative candidates from this area were also present. All the candidates here are facing opponents from other parties or SPLM-turned independents.

The South Sudan’s ruling party compares voting for National Congress Party (NCP) or independent candidates in the south to Jafer Nimeri’s dumping of 1972 Addis Ababa peace agreement.

“SPLM is the signatory to the CPA and it’s determined to take southern Sudanese to the referendum in 2011,” said Kuol Manyang Juuk, the SPLM candidate for Jonglei State governorship. “If you vote for other parties or independent candidates, then CPA will not be implemented,” he added.

Mr. Manyang describes SPLM election rivals in the south as “good brothers” who should “wait till after referendum in 2011. Some are being used (by the north) as third fighters to wrestle us [SPLM] down.” The candidates then recapitulate that “these are hyenas in goat skin” in words of SPLM national chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit.

South Sudan internal affairs minister Gier Chuang Aluong assured Fangak citizens of safety during campaigns and elections. Mr. Chuang said the SPLM is determined to take southerners to referendum. On his part, Commissioner James Maliet declared Fangak as SPLM that with a unilateral support during elections. The leader of isolated county, which can only be reached by plane, says he is hopeful that SPLM will achieve her vision of New Sudan of equal distribution of wealth and development particularly after referendum for self determination. In New Fangak headquarters, there are no boreholes. The commissioner’s car cannot be driven here due to lack of road connecting it with the neighboring counties of Pigi in the eastern and Ayod in the south. And after leaving the plane, the visitors had to foot to the office of commissioner and to the rally.

Gov. Kuol, as state leader, declared that road connecting Fangak with Ayod and Pigi will begin next week. “This is not campaign construction,” he said of the road work.

The whole town turned out for the SPLM gathering where all contesting candidates were given a chance at a time. In this back-up campaign, the SPLM rallies behind her nominees and urges the voters to understand Sudan without SPLM and the future of the southerners without referendum.

April polls are the first inclusive elections in the south since independence in 1956 and part of the comprehensive peace agreement (CPA) signed between the NCP and the former southern rebel; the SPLM in 2005.

I am happy that the Nuer, regardless of intertribal hatred promoted by some Dinka, welcomed Kuol Manyang Juuk in their midst. This is a good sign which we must continue to capitalized on. Kuol is a brave man. He is not dwelling on the divisive past and he has shown that by going inside Nuerland to campaign. By doing so he is going to strengthen unity among our southerners. I urge all of us to join and vote SPLM in April.
    Go Kuol, Go SPLM.
