Beja Congress celebrates the anniversary of armed straggle in eastern Sudan
ASMARA, April 26, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The opposition Beja Congress (BC) yesterday celebrated the 10th anniversary of the starting of armed straggle in eastern Sudan, the meeting was organised in the headquarter of the party near the Eritrean Sudanese border.
The Beja Congress represents the eastern Sudan’s non-Arab, nomadic Beja tribes, which is active in eastern Sudan. It is a member of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed by Mohamed Osman al-Merghani.
Representatives from different Sudanese opposition factions attended the meeting specially from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army.
An appeal for the unity of all marginalized regions has been launched.
Omar Mohamed Tahir the ex-leader of the BC returned to Khartoum following power straggle inside the movement at the end of the last year. He was accused of acting to stop armed operations in eastern Sudan.
Sudanese government undertook several attempts to dislocate this group because it had threatened the pipeline in the past years.
