Sudan electoral body dismisses resignation of its chairman

March 27, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan electoral board has dismissed the resignation of its head Abel Alier stressing he chaired a meeting it held today Saturday while the commission follows its activities as usual.

The denial comes after strong rumours in the capital Khartoum yesterday about Alier resignation which could lead to the delay of electoral process until the parliament is called to appoint a new chairman.

The deputy chairman of the National Election Commission Abdallah Ahmed Abdallah denied in statements to the official SUNA the resignation of NEC chairman Abel Alier saying the Commission, in a meeting chaired by Alier, discussed on Saturday the latest preparation ahead of the critical phase of polling process.

He added in remarks made after the meeting that the NEC tackled the ongoing arrangements for the elections and ensured the receipt of equipment imported from the United Kingdom and South Africa as well as the transfer of required electoral materials to Juba and other regional states.

All the required equipments will be delivered by April 8 and elections will take place as scheduled, he stressed.

On November 25, 2009, Sudanese President appointed Alier and eight other eight members of the NEC after their endorsement by the parliament on November 17, as necessary step towards the organization of general election.

The independent commission is the sole institution that has the authority to fix the date of elections and to postpone it. In accordance with the electoral law, the elections should be organised to take place six months after the establishment of the NEC.

Such resignation if happened would force to postpone the electoral process until the call of two chambers of the parliament by presidential decree in order to approve a new chairman of the Commission after discussion between the two peace partners.

Several opposition parties and Darfur rebel groups ask to delay the election but the ruling National Congress Party refuses the idea. A coalition of of opposition forces and the southern Sudan ruling SPLM agreed today to take a decision on the issue next week after a meeting for the Sudanese presidency where the postponement will be discussed.

Abel Alier should have resigned because he is not doing well for the people of South Sudan. He is Bashir’s NCP stooge as he was Nimeiri’s stooge. This old man who has been Jellaba boy since he grow up in Bor has no shame. Elections will not go well under his chair of NEC.

SPLM need to think twice on the issue of election and referendum.
This election have to be done on April 2010 and referendum in 2011.
We South Sudanese can not afford another dishonoring.
SPLM must reject NEC request because their intention is not that easy. Darfur issues does not ressemble the South because Darfur are NCP themselves.

It is a time for the old Dinka man to stay away from politics. His neurons are not functioning anymore. See sometimes he contradicts himself.

    Hi quys ,
you need to torn down your bigotry toward this great southern icon. The old man has done a lot to southerners if one has to sacrifice it all. He has relentlessly toiled for the right of every southerner directly or indirectly and if one’s has to say that is not good enought than you need to ask those who were in Khartoum during the struggle or who were SPLA top leaders then or now. Ask one of the above mentioned persons and he/she will go down the lists marking all the great things Abel has contributed to the right of southerners inside or outside khartoum. To borrow the smart phrase which our hero Cdr. Thomas cerilo coined first time he defected from NIF to the SPLA “We were SPLA from within”,He always acclaimed. Same thing to Abel, he was and still a southerner from within. As a human right lawyer , he has defend countless cases that NCP were using to prosecute southerners or marginalizes people in the capital. To ask a question, who stop the NCP/ Islamic government from tearing down the churches in the capital back in 90s? do your reseach and that is why we still dearly need him. Since CPA has become so sweet ,we have now begin to forget how it came about. Again,Ask yourself who lay the foundation of CPA before we even start to hear the rumours of its process ? and who gave John Garang and his top negotiators ( inexperience rebells) the legal advises on how to negotiate staunchly with not lossing a ground to canning NCP ? Clearly speaking,it was not other Khartom’s stooge as you label them such as Joseph Langu,Bona Mwalual, or Riak Gai but Molana Abel. He was selected due to his dimensional experiences coupled with his stature. He is a lawyer by profession, has experience dealing with enemy who was to negotiate with SPLA, and last being the key negotiator in Addis Ababa agreement. That makes him an important guidance to UN and CPA grantors. With that huge task on his shoulder , Abel in 1997 led the US envoys , UN’s staffs joined by John Garang to tour South-sudan.They were there to attest the harsh realities of Southern suffering. They past throught Narus and went on to other SPLA’s holding towns as my eyes witnes their passage. In 2003 he was thus called to Washington by state department in the same situation-the CPA negotiation.

So when did Abel became unimportant to us we Southerners if it’s not a mere tribal or personal hatred. Despite all with those acheivements mentioned above, i will not totally flush away your engraved tribal or personal hatred that has dogging you for most of your life , but at least i have tried my best to cure the lack of knowledge you may have inhaled in the air or inherited through your lineage.
last but not least, his ages are gone and it’s a due respect for all of you folks out there to give the old man the credits he has toiled for all these years. If Southerners are that so blinded as it happens on this website, then the heavenly father has watched enought and she will render him his deserved shares.
