SPLM leadership says Arman had asked to quit

By James Gatdet Dak

April 3, 2010 (JUBA) – The withdrawn SPLM presidential candidate, Yasir Saeed Arman, who was nominated by the party in February to contest against the incumbent President of the Republic, Omer Hassan al-Bashir, had voluntarily asked to quit the presidential elections scheduled for 11th April, revealed the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

YasirArman.jpgResponding to a question posed on why the party’s leadership had decided to withdraw its presidential candidate at this stage, Dr. Riek Machar said the decision to pull out Arman was initially advocated by the presidential candidate himself.

“He [Arman] advocated for his withdrawal. We had tried to convince him for weeks not to do that, but he insisted that he wanted it done that way,” Machar said.

On Thursday, Arman said the presidential election was aimed at deflecting the International Criminal Court (ICC), which a year ago issued an arrest warrant for Bashir for alleged war crimes in Darfur.

“The elections for president is made for one person, it is not made for a democratic process or for the Sudanese people, it was only made to save General Bashir from the ICC,” Arman said.

Arman was serving the party as Deputy Secretary General for Northern Sector when the SPLM’s highest organ, the Political Bureau, nominated him in February this year to be its flag bearer in the match to the national presidential palace in Khartoum.

He had conducted several campaigns in both Southern and Northern Sudan states, including in the troubled region of Darfur.

The SPLM after conducting an extraordinary meeting of the Political Bureau on Wednesday in the Southern Sudan’s capital, Juba, officially announced its decision to partially boycott the elections for the country’s presidency by withdrawing its presidential candidate and boycotting elections in Darfur region, citing irregularities in the electoral process as the basis for the decision.

The party however said it would continue with the process to participate in the elections at all the other levels of executive and parliamentary contests.

Prior to the decision for partial boycott of the elections, the SPLM had conducted internal consultations on whether or not to boycott the elections at all levels, or at least in the North, and with some of its officials calling for a postponement while others wanted the party’s participation at all levels and as scheduled for April.

The party’s ruling partner in the Government of National Unity, the National Congress Party (NCP) responded by threatening to cancel the conduct of referendum in the South next year if the SPLM would agree to the boycott of the elections.

Leading the SPLM’s intervening team in Khartoum, Machar also had dialogue with some of the main opposition parties’ leaders who requested the Presidency for the postponement of the elections at all levels until November and tried to seek a consensus.

Many of the main opposition parties have on Thursday announced the boycott of the elections at all levels.

Bashir’s NCP has welcomed the decision by the SPLM to participate in the elections as scheduled to take place nine days from now despite the withdrawal of the presidential candidate and boycott in Darfur.

SPLM was aiming to capture power in Khartoum through the presidential polls which would see it taking over the presidential palace that would effect change as an institutional vehicle for realization of democratic transformation and the vision of New Sudan in the country.

Arman’s withdrawal from the race has come as a surprise to many supporters of the party across the country, prompting some to blame the Political Bureau for allegedly forcing him to step down.

Machar however said the withdrawal of the party’s flag bearer would give no legitimacy to the incumbent President, Al-Bashir.

In accordance with the North-South peace deal, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which ended 21 years of war in 2005, general elections were called for in the country in mid six-year interim period prior to a referendum vote on Southern Sudan independence in January 2011.

    To South Sudanese,

To be honest with you, the decision that was made by SPLM and PB need to be revise before April 11 other we SPLM supporters and SPLA will not support any kind of decision like the way SPLM decide the withdrawal of Yasir Arman. It’s adangerous decision and SPLM as aparty need to check their stupid decision before April 11 other think will be ugly in the South.

What a fuck is this decision?

i really feel frustrated indeed for this other why SPLM Humiliated our potential hero like this? i personally will not a single bullet this time if Yasir is not put back to the race. I regret for this and it is afoolish decision we south Sudanese can not ever made if Dr John Garang de Mabior alive. Never!

Withdrawal will not help the South because it will bring defection again and i awarn SPLM to put back Yasir Arman to the race. Try violate the CPA in this way,but you guys will fight the war alone without majority of support this time if our politicians are dominated by traitors like this.

What a fuck is traitor Riek Machar to talk stupidly about the withdrawing of precidential candidates( Arman)?.

I will fight if the coup happened, but i am not going to fight again if the war happened in 2011 because we have uneducated leaders who just listen very much for evey thing said by traitors. Good luck!

Why not we go for election and wait for the possibilities, after that we proceeded to referendum who we all yearn for decades. Wow!
I hope thing will change, but if not then SPLM will loss alot because it’s not ingenious way of solving things.
Yes, the characteristics of baycotting is common to those who no less about negotiation, and i agree that SPLM plus PB ressemble those.

The problem of Drafur are not for SS and indeed we can not just withdraw our candidate like that. This Riek Machar has recieved bribe from Khartoum and that is why he just mumbling like stupid dog in the media. Shit!

    Dear REAL PATRIOTS,

Is SPLM leadership really expecting us to buy this baloney? They are out of their freaking minds. I predicted that explaining this weird decision to the Southern populace was going to be pretty difficult. Now they are trying to drag CDE Arman’s good name behind a rotten decision that he would NEVER EVER think of, let alone utter in any “meeting”. How can a guy who was the LEADING candidate in every poll all of a sudden decide to quit two weeks before elections?

SPLM must come clean and rat out the TRAITORS who decided to engineer this irrational decision. It will never be forgiven. Some of us care about voting and we deserve a choice. SPLM under KIIR and that TRAITOR called riek the weasel is like a ship without a rudder. It is a party without a VECTOR. We are practically doomed folks. We must do some house cleaning and get rid of dirty traitors in our mids.

    DEAR PATRIOTS,

LET US NOT BELIEVE A WORD THAT THIS WEASEL TRAITOR IS SAYING ABOUT CDE ARMAN. Riek is not on a mission of character assassination after supporting ARMAN’S withdrawal and even recommending it. This was done to buy 40 extra parliamentary seats and referendum. It is UNBELIEVABLE that SPLM would allow NCP to bluff and get away with it. This is what happens when TRAITORS are allowed to enter cattle camp.

    Dengtaath,

Now, do you mean that CDR Yasir Arman was forced to withdraw from the presidencial race because Salva Kiir Mayardit did not run for Sudan presidency?

If you say yes, then SPLM will be in big problem, but if you say no,then you are the one to explianed why SPLM withdraw CDR Yasir Arman while we left with only two weeks.

Brother, if we all want South Sudan to be in harmony then we need to respect this person( Arman) to complete his task that he did for months because this election will help South to quickly go to referendum.

I repeated that this traitor Riek Machar will not be the president of South if we proud citizens are live in this soil unless he erase the traitoring and Arab prostitution within SPLM. This is not a joke!

We die for this in a great number and in fact we can not afford the mess at the last minutes due to self-centered ambition. Arman can lead the presidency if traitor Riek Machar refuse to run,and as well if Salva Kiir refuse. Who do you want while both two lead heads refuse to run for presidency.

There is something going on here in SPLM. Yes, i will fight if the war of overthrowing happened, but iam not going to participate if the war of referendum occurred in 2011 unless the decision is revise before April 11,2010. Sorry for this sort of recent SPLM leadership.

    Dear South Sudanese,

Read this deal that traitor Riek Machar did to SPLM.
He was bribe by Omer Bashier.

“One rumor which, if true, would be wildly explosive is that the SPLM cut a deal with the NCP to withdraw Yasir Arman (the competitor most likely to bring Bashir into a runoff vote), in exchange for Bashir’s promise not to interfere with next year’s referendum.”

What a lame excuse, the SPLM and its PB better explained its position clearly and not just pass on the buck. We all know that Yassir Arman was only a statistic in the presidential race ‘coz the SPLM would rather have Al Bashir win so that they (SPLM) could gain the south’s independence, come 2011. But history has taught us (southerners) that “a good Arab is a dead Arab”. My point is that, can we really trust Al Bashir to deliver the goods (referendum) once he wins the elections? My gutt feeling tells me that we southerners are in for a big disapointment. As my grandfather used to say ” Its better to have one bird in your hand, than two on a tree”.

The SPLM has put all its eggs on the referendum basket, hence it has danced to the NCP tunes regardless of whatever music the maniacs in Khartoum decide to play. What a freak show.

    Cheers

2010 election and referendum might be disaster indeed if Bashier take the presidency without Yasir Arman as achallenger.

SPLM made awrong decision to withdraw Arman in the race. This influnce came about from traitor Riek Machar who was bribe by NCP so that SPLM can withdraw from the race so that Bashier will take presidency without any problem.

Indeed, nothing critical thinking can come up when we have traitors around, and in fact they are Nuer in general.

We Nuer are good for everything and we are supporting Bashier and Dr Lam Akol. Let me add something that we Naath believe in food and wurnyang.ngundeeng for centuries as our true god in our land.

We make acoalition governmnet with Bashier in 1991 so that we can get our selve independent from Dinka who have been our presige leaders since the creation of Earth. After we make allaince with Arab governmnet, we agree with our respected president Bashier so that we can deployed our brave Nuer in the oil field in Bentiu to protect it from Dinka government who want to exploit our oil.

We deployed Matip Nhial to protect our oil from Dinka SPLM because that is the only thing that we can lived with,no other that can help us in this soil. We Nuer have been living for stealing and raiding cattle from Dinka for centuries, and in fact if we felt like we have nothing to eat, we go and raid civilians and take their cattle for our living so that we can wait for our crops to grow in our Nuer land.

Moreover, We Nuer value Arab more than the South because they have been giving as free food, and even they provide us free arms that can make us easy to go raiding and penetrate those Dinka who can resist our raiding. Yes, we Nuer knows that we can die but we value food than any thing and that is why we go raing the cattle because food is better than life.

Indeed, because we Nuer have shallow mind that can compete with South Sudanese, the only thing that we can do is to be nagative always and complained when the food is ready because we Nuer have no capacity to lead at all because we are the curse comunity as predicted by Ngundeeng and wurnyang.

Though we Nuer slaughtered Wurnyang when he gimmick as by giving as two identitical bulls, he kept one in the house and he led one bull killed and latter subsituted the dead with the alive bull and he said this bull is the bull that we killed before, as aresult, when we Nuer go to Dinka Bor land and every single dead Nuer will rose in his own house. In fact, because of the promise of Wurnyang, we just jump to the barrel of the guns and we all die while hopping that we will resurrect in our own house. None of us Nuer get up in houses therefore, we slaughtered Wurnyang and left with Ngundeeng.

We Nuer are sure that our only and educated man- Riek Machar Durgon will be the president of South for 50 years so that he can make it like the way Dinka and Equatorians led in the country/Sudan. We believed in Ngundeeng as our only servior, and no more than that because he promise as to have aleader in the near future and he told us that we are the only people who will lead the South till death.

Frankly, Dinka must know that we fight hard because of food and if they don,t provide us /Nuer enough food before April, then there will be no election as well as referendum because we desperately need somthing to eat. We Nuer are brave for the killing of innocents because those are the only people we can fight with. We Nuer knows that we are born empty and will die empty, but what can we do because our mind can not help us to undestand the positives of education. We are the curse community, we know about that but what can we do now.

We Naath we die after the very best two Nuer leaders; Dr Riek Machar and Agenlina Teny because if they die no any other leader can lead the south. We hope we Naath want every one to be uncivilian than attending education because we need more young youth to do the raiding and give food to the old and weak individual. I regrete of being called Anuer because our mind is thick and dark and that is why we can not see the truth behind the eye level. Thanks Ngundeegng Oyeee, Nuer Oyeee.

We should all respect Armans decision to stand down from the elections, i am sure he did this in the best interests of the CPA and int he interests of all Sudanese, he is a great and and he know why he did this, we just have to continue to support the peace process and also rally behind our various parties during this elections, it is time for Sudanese to work together to solve their problem through a free and fair election, the parliamentary and state elections are very important, opposition in the north or south should all focus to get those seats and work to bring more change through the parliament and the state governments, lets all work to safeguard the CPA as it was agreed untill the end of the intereim period , wether it will result in unity or seperation we all have to accept the results of it and respect the decisions and right of the southerners to make their choice , this is the only way to confirm the voluntary unity of Sudan, no one wants wars CPA has set the road map to all solutions to the Sudanese problem, we just have to follow it now.

    Mack Maweru,

Politics is a dangerous game. In politics, people or politicians without further analysis are the one who fall to the dirty side of it,but those who have clear illustration of ideas fall to the apparent side of it.

In fact, i doubt whether you understand politics according to the way that you response to my comments.

Let me tell you that i knew politics that you proclaimed and if you have doubt then it’s your responsibility to tell my capacity whether i knew politics or not. If you think of someone who left his village in 1987 and being trained in 1989 in Bunga, and fought in Kapoeta, Bilnyang, and Juba knew nothing in SPLM politics ,then your nature will just witness that. Anyway, i can,t comprehend your politics at all because the one that you know is less then i thought of.

My friend, SPLM made a wrong decison to withdraw Yasir Arman at the last minutes. We SPLM who disagree with this decision have more questions that you think of. If South Sudanese are aiming for referendum, then why not we can conduct this election, and just wait for the result. If Arman win the election then is that not what we want because he will not interfere with referendum.

In contrast, if Bashier win the election then why are we care much about his ICC as the precedure that can hand referendum to the South Sudan. It seems that we South Sudanese are confuse base on these issues because 2011 what we South hope to be separate country,so why are we worried about Bashier ICC while we will not be the same country after 2011. If NCP steal the elections, then the withdrwal will and can not solve our issues because this CPA is not something we easily can torn apart by ourselves, never. In deed, we South Sudanese need to perform April election so that we can immediately go to the referendum without delay.

I don,t think we you know politic at all on how you reason. You said that SPLM made adeal with NCP so that if Bashier win the election, then he will give South Sudan referendum. Are you crazy my dear? what are the cues that shows that Omer Bashier will help South to be separated. What are documents or the agrees that was made between SPLM and NCP so that we South Sudanese will be sure that we will give Bashier presidency for the independent of South Sudan. Are you now not talking about the addis Ababa agreement again?. What are the evidences that will help the South when they withdraw Arman in the race will help them.

We South Sudanese need to understand that our people value time that we do and therefore the international community and the other monitoring team who have devoted themselves for the election and referendum might misunderstood SPLM because their thinking contradicts the agreements.

Mr Mack, please don,t count your chicken before they hatch because lots of them always died and others remain in the broadening cage. We South Sudanese can not thought of giving Bashier presidency will help for referendum because we have no evidences for that. We can not trust other oppostions parties because they are the same people who fought the South. We can not agree for helping Bashier while we have someone who will throw him to the carve because he is another person who fought the South. We don,t want to think of Darfur issues as the major issues that can help SPLM to make acoalition latter for Bashier.None will help us if went seperation unless we SPLM need war. Please tell me what you know about politics then thinking about the deals. Thanks
