SPLM’s Kiir visits Maiwut County near Ethiopian border

By James Gatdet Dak

April 8, 2010 (JUBA) – Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Southern Sudan presidential candidate for the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) visited Maiwut County of Upper Nile state, on Wednesday, during his last days of campaign as the polling day is only 72 hours away.

Kiir urged the population of Gaajaak-Nuer inhabiting the County to vote for SPLM, which he said was born in their area in 1983, as he was referring to Itang where the SPLM/A was formed and historical Bilpam, which was the SPLM/A GHQrs and territory of Gaajaak-Nuer.

Bilpam, which is on the Ethiopian side of the border, is currently inhabited by the Ethiopian Gaajaak-Nuer under the administration of Gambella region in Ethiopia.

According to Biel Thich, one of the President’s campaign team in Upper Nile state, over five thousand people gathered in the town to listen to the President.

Kiir promised the County citizens that his re-elected administration would construct a road connecting the state capital, Malakal to Pagak, a Payam headquarters under Maiwut County and less than one (1) kilometer away from the Ethiopian border.

The President was accompanied by the Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny and members of Campaign Management Team (CMT) chaired by Dr. Samson Kwaje.

Kiir also talked about other activities related to development, especially the education of females, and opening of healthcare centers.

Funny how politicians are creatures of habits all over the world. Why didn’t Kiir visit Maiwut county when he was not campaigning if he really cared that much about Gajaak Nuer. He has been the president of South Sudan for over 4 years now and this is the first time he is discovering that there is an area called Maiwut that lacks roads? Get real.

President Salva Kiir Miyardit, it look that you are copying the statement of Omar Bashir when he had said in Unity State that if he is elected, then he will construct the road from Unity State to Kadugli. I think this what you are trying to said to the Nuer Citizens of Gajaak.

To be honest, I think building the road is not a big concern. The big concern is that you will not win this Election at all because you are lacking of political senerio. When the Southern Sudanese citizens nominated you in order to proceed Dr John Garang’s footstep, it mean that you are selected because to bring the Southern Sudanese from suffering which they have been encountered from the hand of Khartoum Government since 1983 until this time. But, however, in this time, you didn’t do anything at all.

How can you said that you will construct a road and healthcare for the citizens of Nuer Gajaak and you didn’t do anything in Juba? If you want to construct a road and a healthcare to the Citizens of Nuer Gajaak, then you need to do that promise first in Juba so that everybody can see your promise. Matter of leadership is a problem in the Southern Sudan. I wish Omar Bashir in order to win this Election so that we Southern Sudanese should get a full slave from Arabs. Mr Salva Kiir Miyardit, honestly speaking, you will not win this Election. You will not be called as president of Sudan and therefore, you will remain as a Vice president.

Lastly, why you don’t go to Khartoum and campaign there instead of spending most of your time in Southern Sudan? “POOR PERSON ALWAYS THINK WISELY, WHILE RICH PERSON ALWAYS THINK NEGATIVELY”. This is what I exactly see happening now in Southern Sudan.

    Bravo Salvatore Kiir,

It is never too late to realize and remember where the SPLM/A was born and nurtured. It was in that Gaajaak-Nuer land.

‘Bilpam’ which means “rocky hills” in Nuer is Gaajaak territory and was the headquarters of Anya-nya II from 1975 to 1983 and SPLM/A GHQrs from 1983 to 1990. I heard that the SPLA GHQrs there in Juba is called Bilpam which is a good idea to keep the name alive.

Please it is good for a leader to think about the people whose land and resources was used to nurture the struggle. The first Ethiopian Nuer governor in Gambella region, Mr. Thowath Pal Chai, from Gaajaak-Nuer was the one who welcomed John Garang to Itang in 1983. He gave Garang the support he needed to stay as his guest in that region.

Gaajaak have forgiven the lates John Garang, Kerubino Kwanyin, William Nyuon and Dr. Francis Ngor for killing their civilians in 1985.

Now is the time to help their areas develop as they also inhabit a very strategic border with Ethiopia.
