Gration welcomes SPLM participation in Northern Sudan elections

By James Gatdet Dak

April 10, 2010 (JUBA) – The US Special Envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration, has welcomed the decision confirmed by the leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) that it will participate in the elections in Northern Sudan states, saying it was important for the prioritized upcoming referendum in the South.

Gration_Machar.jpgGration on Friday said it was the right decision for the Southern Sudan’s ruling party to participate in the elections in giving priority to referendum for independence of the region, in addition to popular consultations in the contested areas of Southern Blue Nile and Nuba mountains.

He also expressed his opinion in line for continuity of “higher” relations between the SPLM and the National Congress Party (NCP), which he said was for successful implementation of the 2005 North-South peace deal, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Earlier in the meeting, the Vice President of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan and SPLM Deputy Chairperson, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, briefed the American Envoy on the importance of his party’s decision to also hold elections in Northern states except only in the troubled region of Darfur.

Machar explained that his party withdrew its presidential candidate, Yasir Saeed Arman, because he [Arman] presented a number of challenges which he said were obstructing his chance to successfully compete and after he several times requested the party’s leadership to allow him to quit the presidential race.

The SPLM Chairperson and presidential candidate for the regional government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, in his final campaign rally in Juba on Friday, announced to his party’s potential voters in the country that the party had no presidential candidate to vote for against incumbent President, Omer Hassan al-Bashir and other candidates.

He earlier confirmed that the Political Bureau had last week passed a resolution to withdraw Yasir Arman from the national presidential race in addition to boycott of elections in Darfur while elections would continue in other parts of Sudan.

In his meeting with the American Special Envoy, Dr. Machar said the SPLM would contest for parliamentary and gubernatorial positions at all levels in Northern Sudan.

SPLM is an instrument of change in Sudan, he argued, and boycotting elections in the North would not be in the interest of the party’s vision which he said had given priority to both democratic transformation of the country and self-determination for the people of Southern Sudan.

He also warned that boycotting elections by Northern Sector would create internal bad relations within the SPLM and also with the NCP.

Machar expressed fear that any boycotting scenario in the North would create dilemma by denying the SPLM Northern Sector participation in the next elected government. He said this scenario may force SPLM Northern Sector to work in opposition to the next government and may also be tempted to do underground subversive activities that would force NCP, if re-elected, to act on them while the SPLM Southern Sector would be in government and dealing with the NCP as implementing partners of the CPA.

The situation, he further observed, might also in the process force the SPLM Northern Sector outside the next government to be hostile to the SPLM Southern Sector which would be in the next government.

Even if the Southern Sudan secedes and forms a separate independent country in the next nine months, Machar further argued, it is still in the best interest of the party to push for democratic transformation and political installation of SPLM in the Northern system of governance as this would nurture future good relations between the two would-be separate countries.

The meeting also touched on the remaining issues in the implementation of the CPA, particularly the North-South border demarcation and post referendum issues.

Gration, who seemed to express satisfaction with the SPLM’s strategic political priorities, said his office was ready to assist in the contentious issues between the two peace-partners [NCP and SPLM] so that referendum on independence of Southern Sudan would be conducted as scheduled for January 2011.

Gration welcomes SPLM participation in Northern Sudan elections
    Dear readers,

I thank the SPLM leadership for clarifying the issue and avoiding the consequences of boycotting elections in the Northern Sector in avoiding the unwise tactics by the two communist unionist boys who wanted it messed up.

Thanks to Salva Kiir for rebuking the ill-intended immature announcement by the two communist boys (Pagan and Arman). Bravo, Dr. Riek Machar for the vision and wise strategic leadership.

I appeal to you guys who support Arman’s presidential contest that you should instead blame Yasser Arman himself for chickening away from the competition against Bashir. He asked several times as revealed in the article to be allowed to quit the race after assessing that he was going to fail the elections. So why blame Salvatore Kiir who previously blessed the nomination of Arman for presidency? And why blame Dr. Riek Machar either who also blessed the candidacy of Yasser Arman?

The decision to withdraw Arman initially came from him and consequently forced the politburo to withdraw him. This has now become the fact of the story and so don’t blame any one else.

However, the withdrawal of Arman should not also mean the whole boycott of elections in the North. Arman is not the SPLM of Northern sector but he happens to chair its secretariat. Pagan is simply a rebel and destroyer of the coming referendum.

And read such wise remarks by Dr. Riek Machar which he said would result in the scenario of boycotting the elections in the north. We need SPLM (north and south) to remain united and be strengthened in both north and south even if the South becomes an independent nation.

Please be wise in your comments and let us support our leadership to row our boat to the safe shore (Promised Land) by January 2011.

What is a ill analysis, a naïve approach. You Riak and Salva have proven once and for all that you are incompetence leaders. Just go ahead and and give legitimacy Al-Bashier by participating in rigged election, and then wait to see what he will do for you guys after election. Did you forget there is still post referendum issues need to be negotiated with NCP. Good luck with you naïve approach, the dumpers never learn.

Great job from Mr Gration , i believ he Gration has understood the Sudanese problem very well and he iw trying to find a balance approach to reach a satisfactory end for all stake holders within the CPA agreement, he is also approaching this elections issue with very open mind and also knows that this is just the begining of democratic process in Sudan and it needs to be supported. As Riek said SPLM will participate in all elections accept the presidency of republic only. every citizen should be ready by tomorrow morning to vote, the moment for truth has arrived. This elections will not be perfect but it will be as democratic as possible, which means a good begining for a country which has never seen democracy for many decades, i see a bright democratic future for both north and south ahead and a good brotherly relations based on respect and mutual benefits.

    Gatwech,

Salva kiir Mayadit was in forth position in SPLM(1983-2005) and your Nyagat traitor riek Machar was somewhere in SPLM-1984-1990(Riek). What are you talking. Say Amen to our heros: Dr Garang, William Nyuon, Karbino Kuanyin, Arok Thon and Nyachingak for keeping SPLM alive until you born in 1990s. Say Amen to them!

I want to tell you that SAY AMEN to DR JOHN GARANG de MABIOR because he safe you from Slavery because he fought Nuer and Arab North.

He fought Nuer more than ten years and Arab for 21 years. I know food lovers can,t wait for food and that is why you said he delay referendum. Calling Dr Garang bright vision of New Sudan as poor help me that you are Nyagat who was born yesterday.

You don,t even know that the EndFfather battallions contain numerious Nubaians, mabans, and Fuji who fought in upper Nile, blue Nile, Kordufan, and in Equatorians.

Yes, i don,t have to waste my time with you because you just know something to eat while hot. Please always wait for food to get cool. I know those who called New Sudan of Dr Garang like the way you did are people who sleep under Bashier house.

And i have no doubt that Nuer does it, just check yourself that if you are not Nuer then iam wrong but if you Nuer then understand that i am true. Thanks

    Gatwech,

Tell me which document has change since the formation of SPLM. Everything still the same. Everything from Dr Garang is the same truck SPLM are following. Ok!

Yes, Dr Garang and Nyachigak died as heros. Arok Thon killed Zibeerie -the defense minster of Arab regime, also he is ahero.

My friend, how about SPLM join Khartoum governmnet in 1991 like the way Nuer of traitor riek did in 1991, what would be the outcome by now? Would you talk of seperation by now, or would you talk of bieng t

he slave in his country. Would you take of oil now, since your slave Paulino Matip was bribe to fight SPLM in the Oil field. Is he not awatch dog? Matip is awatch dog who help Bashier to fight SPLM.

Is traitor Riek not acoward dog who help Bashier by fight SPLM and he encourage SPLM to withdraw from Juba deployement when SPLM almost captured Juba/ Is Traitor Riek not awatch dog of Bashier.

Who is the most powerful leader, the one who wlcome you to his govermnet or the one who begged you for any position in the party he left couple of years ago.

Denying the fact, will let you to the grave. What is self-determination? you think that the independent of SSIM. Your independent means from Dinka, ok! Do you know that states were form when Dr Garang Alive and even the policies are all mandated by him.

If your traitor Riek was a respected leader, then why not he signed part of CPA like others it because he was part of Arab militia mentality. The independent of South Sudan will judge the founder father of SPLM. He will be recognized, Sava Kiir will be recognized while Traitor Riek will be recognized for leading the negotiation teams not independent, ok!

I know the dead horse can not listen, anyway let me stop here. Thanks

Northern Sector and Southern Sector, what are they? Unionists and Separatists, this is the answer, SPLM at the end come to realized the true Political orientation, they were totally under the influence of Mr. Yasir Arman and Mr.Pagan Omoum ideology, but good that they have come to meet the demand of Southerners.

We should contest what ever the result would be: this is our aim, Democracy mean that and this in compliance with CPA stipulation .

To recycle bin Mr. Yasir and pagan.
