Four peacekeepers are missing In South Darfur

April 12, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur said four soldiers are missing since 24 hours in South Darfur as they are returning to their private accommodation.

Darfur peacekeepers have been the target of several attacks where more than 20 soldiers were killed since the African Union United Nation operation took over from the African mission in January 2008.

“The peacekeepers last movement was reported at 16:00 hrs on 11 April 2010, as they departed their team site just outside of Nyala, South Darfur, on a 7km journey back to their private accommodation,” said Noureddine Mezni the UNAMID spokesperson.

The four missing peacekeepers, two are men and two female, belong to UNAMID Police in sector south.

The head if the joint mission Ibrahim Gambari said “deeply concerned”, adding he was direct contact with Sudanese Government officials over the issue.

UNAMID has mobilized its resources in the region and is working closely with the Government of the Sudan and local authorities in the search for the missing peacekeepers.

The incident occurred while a five day polling is taking place in the troubled region like the other parts of the country.

Sudanese government and the UNAMID signed on December 29 last year an additional protocol to enhance safety measures to ensure the security of the peacekeepers working in the restive region.

According to the SOFA signed in February 2008, Sudanese government is responsible of the security and protection of UNAMID peacekeeping personnel and their assets.

The Sudanese Government is responsible of their security and protections!Isn’t that very funny! What are they doing? Are they coming to protect or to be protected? If they can’t protect themselves, what are they coming for?Is it just to increase the burden over the government and have a reason to interfer in our internal affairs. It is good that the government had insisted that they should’t be from the old colonial countries .Otherwise we would have been a colony by now!

    mohammed ali ,

I seriously controvert your anaysis because these peacekeepers who are always missing in Darfur are victims of the khartoum goverment. We have to deplore this kind of act that was conducted by Khartoum regime and likes in Darfur because they kidnapped these peacekeepers in most cases.

This problem is not about who protect him/herself because these peacekeepers are not familiar to the enviroment and ;in fact, they can astray to the enemy zone that frankly can ruine their lives. Please blame the NCP soldiers instead of the victim where are eager to serve the lives of innocent people of Drafur under the khartoum regime.
    Thanks
