Eritrean president holds talks with W. Sudan rebel leaders

ASMARA, April 27, 2007 (Sudan Tribune) — Eritrean president Isayas Afewerki today received and held talks with Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) delegation led by the chairman, Mr Abd Al-Wahid Mohamed Ahmad Nur, and the secretary, Mr Mani Arkoi Minawi, and discussed the prevailing situation in Darfur and the peace process.

During the meeting, President Isayas said the Eritrean government would endeavour for the success of the ongoing peace talks in N’djamena, and specially the efforts exerted to grant humanitarian assistance to the clash victims.

President Isayas said the prevalence of peace and security in Darfur is of great importance to Sudan and the region at large.

President Isayas wished all the success to the efforts being exerted by Chadian President Idriss Deby to bring peace, and also wished both sides, the government and the rebel movement, to accept and acknowledge President Idriss Deby’s efforts.

Eritrean president Isayas Afewerki received on April 24, the leader of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) John Garang who briefed him on the developments in Sudanese peace talks in Naivasha.

The SPLM/A and the SLM/A are members of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The headquarter of the Sudanese opposition umbrella, is located in the Eritrean capital.
