Food crisis is looming in South Sudan- UN

April 17, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Southern Sudan is facing a major food crisis that could lead to “free fall”, said Lisa Grande, the UN Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Juba, on Thursday.

“We have a very general problem of food insecurity across all of southern Sudan,” she told the AFP, adding “We are looking at a situation where 4.3 million people require some forms of food assistance during the year”.

Insecurity and tribal violence displaced many villagers preventing them from cultivating their land, combined to the rising food price created a “humanitarian perfect storm” she stressed.

In remarks published last March the UN official said internal conflicts in Southern Sudan have risen from last year’s levels.

The number of incidents of inter-tribal conflicts in the region has already reached 70 separate incidents in the first two months of 2010 alone compared to 102 incidents during the whole of last year.

Grande said some 450 people have already been killed and nearly 60,000 displaced by the clashes.

The humanitarian official said places such as Akobo on the border with Ethiopia were among “the hungriest places on the face of the planet. And there are a lot of Akobos,” stressing.that seven out of the 10 southern states were “in trouble.”

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has pre-positioned 60,000 tonnes of food all over the states which are in trouble before seasonal rains which could hamper deliveries in the region.

“What we are avoiding is a free fall, when people are dying in mass. We are in a situation of struggle. We are at the break,” Grande warned.

She said another failed harvest would create an “unimaginable situation,” adding that south Sudan’s problems would not be overshadowed by troubles in Darfur, where a seven-year civil war has left around 300,000 people dead.

“This year, the attention has to be on the south. They are going through their moment of history,” she said.

    Patriots,

Kiir and traitor riek have managed to turn South into a starving region by not instituting agricultural schemes to make one of the most fertile regions on earth a food exporter. Meanwhile, North is able to export 200 tonnes of sorghum to Ethiopia. North is using Nile waters to irrigate large tracks of land and is able to be self-sufficient in food production. There is no magic trick. They just used what they already have and did it diligently.

South on the other hand is eagerly waiting for someone to help them out. What a shame. I know a generation of Southerners who can change this reality. Unfortunately, they are not being heard.

When are we going to think of those villagers as our vulnerable gran parents, parents and young sibling? WHEN?
WHEN are we going to stop blaming each other for the problems when wer are all equally part of the problem and NOT the solution.
WHEN are we going to cease to be a liability to the international commuinty.
WHEN are we going to get fed up for sustained failure and have pride in our community and start building up bit by bit!
All we are interested in is POWER!
    We all failed our community

The same faces again making the same claims that she made last year and the year before that, lets ask her where has the money given previously gone? did she invest it in the community to buy agricultural tools and train local farmers? did to put the money to support and upgrade sills so locals can rraise their own money? or all wasted on UN high standard of life? now they are desperate to get donations so they can pocket it, i would urge those who want to give money to give it directly and not hand it to this UN officials who are stealing all the aid money, from 100% money donated only 10% reaches the poor, they buy expensive cars , they live in expensive houses in Sudan and you will find them in the bars everyday getting drunk and having sex with officials, now when they are running broke for corrption, they come with a new issue that more money is needed for hunger coming soon HAHAHAHA

Where did the mone given beore gone? They just want to rise money for their own pockets this corrupt UN officials. shame on those corrupt UN officials, lets ask Lisa Grande, what did she do with the money that she asked for last year and the year before which was donated? did she invest it properly, did she train locals and upgrade their farming skills or help put them into new activities to raise money? you will all see, next year she will be back for more donations this vulture woman. however their private efforts is appreciated.

The last statement from Grande is appreciated, South Sudan is going to the historical moment, the world shouldn’t turn eyes away from South and give more focus to Darfur issue. The world need to support peace and implementation of the CPA.
Yes people are dying, because of hatred that triggering tribal wars. If people of Akobo cannot chare life with people of Nasir as before, there is no doubt that the starvation must get worsen. The same to other states if cross movement is not free and people fear of their lives when they cross to other states, South Sudan will depend on aid for many years.

    Time1,

I don,t think whether you can live or stay by yourself. You always need help. It’s obvious that some one who always talk about color as you do is desperately delivering baseless messeges to the generation of today.

You seems rebuttaling the well constructed argument with your little immoral flimsy arguments. When did South Sudan stop depending on foreign aid. South and other poor countries feed mostly on NGOs Since 1980s till now. We non-profit organizations are in Sudan.South Sudan: UN, Unicef, WFP, LWF ,and many NGOs operating in the south.

I don,t think you are keen enough when you say and encourage aid/NGOs to stay away. Check what the reporter said. The Akobo citizens are the poorest in the entire planet. So you went those poor people to die because you don,t need white/foreiners as you said in the South because they will prevent others to making their living. No my friend, you know less than you are conveying.

Are you really serious? This is what you wrote “i will be happy if EU stop aid and keep it for themselves, this will force those how ask it to work hard for their own meal—”.

How about those who can not afford to make their own meal? do you want them to die just like that. My friend, I always doubt about your analogy.

    Crisis after crisis!

First, there was corruption than ignorance and nepotism now famine is looming at our doorstep, when will the people accountable for all these chaos be brought to book. The so called GoSS are a gang of mongrels who spend time and money to fulfil their selfish devilish schemes rather than better the lives of our people. The sweat and blood our toil will one day make these thieves grow “humps” on their backs like camels.

Anyway, most of these morons are reaching their expiry date according to their biological time clock, so this saves someone like me from committing homicide.

Time for the change of the old guards, so that southern Sudan can realise its dream of becoming Africa’s newest nation. In this modern times, in the age of computers and the Internet, a young nation will need innovation, accountability, plans and stratigies that will project it towards prosperity and economical stability.

    Word.
