April 19, 2010 (JUBA) – Shootings occurred on Sunday evening, in Leer town of the Sudan’s oil-rich Unity state, when five unidentified gunmen suddenly emerged and began to randomly shoot live bullets into the air at the center where boxes containing ballot papers were being kept while awaiting ferrying to the main office.
The suspected aim by the gunmen, according to a security source in the town, was to try to scary away staff of electoral commission and monitors at the station in order to steal ballot boxes that were to be transported to the state capital, Bentiu.
Leer County is one of the strongholds for the independent candidate, Angelina Teny, where the main challenger and incumbent caretaker governor, Taban Deng Gai, has also suffered an overwhelming defeat according to the figures revealed by party agents.
In one of the centers, for instance, where Teny got 1,879 votes, Gai got only 6 votes.
Leer is left behind in reporting the results to the headquarters in Bentiu because of arguments between Gai’s agents and the rest of other parties’ agents over the filling of forms that were required to accompany the ballot boxes.
Yohanes Musa Pouk who is in charge of Information and Media in Teny’s campaign team told Sudan Tribune that supporters of the incumbent governor were suspected to be behind the attempt to loot the ballot boxes because of the big defeat their candidate also suffered in Leer County.
He further explained that out of the state’s all 9 counties, Teny won the 6 most populous counties by a wide margin and including the state capital, Bentiu, while she only lost to Gai by a narrow margin in the other 2 less populous counties of Abiemnhom and Guit, Gai’s home county.
He revealed that Teny has opened a case with NEC office over the ninth county, Pariang, where her agents plus other parties’ agents from UDF and NCP were prevented from monitoring the polling by the county officials, forcing them to withdraw.
He however predicted a landslide victory despite the loss in the two counties as revealed by preliminary results and uncertainty over the third county.
Angelina Teny, the wife of Southern Sudan’s Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has also been the state minister of Energy and Mining in the Khartoum-based Government of National Unity for the last five years.
Disowned by her party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) after declaring her independent candidature, Teny in her manifesto explained that she was responding to “public outcry for a new leader in the state…and to save the office from falling into the hands of a different political party as the popularity of the current governor severely dwindled throughout the state.”
Educated in Great Britain, the 40+ years old gubernatorial contestant criticized the current state administration for failure to provide development services to the people for the last five years despite the presence of resources, which she described as “astonishing experience to every citizen of Unity state.”
NEC on Saturday had begun announcing preliminary executive and parliamentary elections results from individual states and the final results are expected by Tuesday from all the 25 states of the Africa’s largest country.

The last time i checked the official polls in Bentiu, Taban Deng was leading the northern counites( Mayom, Guit, Abiemnom, Parieang, and so on) by 128,000 votes to 90000 for all the opposition combined and is leading by 70%, in the Southern counties were Angelina’s Husband, Dr Riek has more political power that he lent to his wife had 50% of the votes while Hon Brigedier.Taban Deng gai who is a champion of the underdogs and people who went from nothing to greatness has 40%, in intself a major victory in the first day of vote counting in the Agriculture rich state.
This information comes from a very realiable source and i thought Sudantribune having so many followers would at least take the time and effort to feed them the correct news based on realistic facts and figures. When will Taban Deng lose in his home county of Gikany, even someone with half a brain would know thats not possible under current circumstances.
Taban Deng is a champion, and if he wins this election the people of malakal will soon know why, with the road he has built that goes from the town center of Bentiu, upto Guit in less than 20 mins then strait to malakal, trade between the two states will soon to florish, just u wait.

I don’t know how to make you understand very simple and clear issues that your low IQ is unfortunately not getting.
Tell me which local language/dialect do you speak or read better even if you are a Falata I will try to explain it to you in your own dialect so that you understand the system and meaning of being “running mates” in elections.
Look, when somebody is nominated by his or her party (not citizens in the country), he or she choses somebody that is very popular among the “citizens of that country” to be a “running mate” so that you as presidential candidate get votes from that person’s supporters.
The tactic is that you want your own supporters as the top presidential candidate plus the supporters of the other person you want to be your Vice President to all vote for you and make you win the elections.
For example, Salvatore Kiir may get only 30% of votes cast to him if he contested alone without Dr. Machar.
But because Dr. Machar’s supporters, who may have constituted 70% of all votes now cast to Kiir, know that Dr. Machar is going to be the Vice President as declared in the “running mate” agreement. These supporters even if they wold not vote for Kiir if he ran alone would then now vote for Kiir because of his teaming up with Dr. Machar (which is an indirect vote for Dr. Machar).
In this case, 70% of the votes cast to Kiir in last week’s elections might have come from Dr. Machar’s supporters across South Sudan while the other 30% come directly from Kiir’s supporters. So both of them are elected as “running mates” in that way. They campaigned together as “twin” campaigners and recruited their respective supporters to vote for both of them to the presidency (President/Vice President).
Salvatore Kiir can not look for another Vice President after the elections because it would amount to stealing of votes from Dr. Machar’s supporters (citizens of South Sudan) and can be termed as a serious violation in the “running mate” agreement.
Some leaders if they are confident enough and know that they can win without a “running mate” or pre-chosen Vice President, they just campaign alone and form only campaign team headed by a manager and reserve the position of the Vice President to whoever they may choose among the party leaders after the elections.
But “running mate” or “twin runners” system is completely a different thing my dear. They are both elected by the people….
They will be just sworn in (take oath of office) for formality purposes after winning the election…
