Ethiopian PM meets with visiting Sudanese official
April 24, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi met today with a Sudanese delegation led by presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie.
The visit follows another previously unannounced one by Salva Kiir made to Addis Ababa a week ago in his capacity as president of South Sudan.
Zenawi at the time expressed hopes that all the parties in Sudan would be satisfied with the elections that took place this month but for which results have yet to be announced.
Nafie’s visit could also be related to the escalating tensions between Nile basin countries on one side and Egypt and Sudan on the other.
The Egyptian and Sudanese government rejected attempts by the other countries to reallocate the shares of the Nile river stipulated by the 1929 and 1959 water agreements. Egypt insists on maintaining its share of 55.5 billion cubic meters of water from the river — more than half of the Nile’s flow.
Egypt also wants veto power over any new irrigation projects undertaken by the other nine riparian states.
Observers say that Sudan’s stance which is supportive to Egypt is driven by political considerations rather than economic ones. They point out that Sudan itself will require more water than is available in the coming years for economic and agricultural expansion.

The African leaders need to understand that they want relations among them in term of social ,economics,and political.
The economics relation will enhance the condusive atmosphere in the whole of continenet rather then political greedy. Our African politicians need to learn from the rest of the world leaders that the war is not the better way to built relation and the nation, it’s economics,social,and friendly political that matter to promote friendship.
I don,t think whether South Sudan and Egypt can be friend if they want to built adeadly project that will leave them suffered for their rest of their lives.
They attempt this and they are insisting but will help both of us if we want relation base on water point that can be used as power/electercity.
Northern Sudan attempt to used the Nile water for their own used without South while the whole out and inlet are both around the South.
Yes, why not we all always talk of relationship rather than political manipulation against each other.
