Ugandan minister says Sudan still backing LRA rebels

KAMPALA, April 28, 2004 (New Vision) — Lord’s Resistance Army rebel leader Joseph Kony is still getting supplies from Sudan despite the ongoing diplomatic initiatives between Sudan and Uganda to bring an end to the 18-year old insurgency in northern Uganda.

The acting permanent secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, J.B. Onen, was yesterday presenting a paper on the perspectives on armed conflicts in the Great Lakes Region at Regency Hotel in Kampala.

Onen said although the Sudan government said it was not supporting the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels, there were some forces within Sudan that had continued to provide him with new military uniforms and guns.

“We pray that the peace talks between the Sudan government and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army in Kenya will succeed. Only then can Kony’s supplies be cut off,” Onen said.
