Yambio celebrates the election of Western Equatoria Governor

April 28, 2010 (YAMBIO) – People in the capital of Western Equatoria spontaneously went to the streets to celebrate the historical victory of Col Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro immediately after a declaration made by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

According to the 26 April NEC announcement, Col. Bakosoro garnered 78,563 votes, while his Sudan People’s Liberation Movement rival and incumbent governor, Jemma Nunu Kumba, received 73,057 votes.

Col. Bakosoro became the only independent candidate to win a governorship in Southern Sudan.

At Col. Bakosoro’s home in central Yambio, supporters lined up to congratulate him. Speaking to the crowd in the local dialect, Zande, the incoming governor thanked them for their encouragement.

Thirty minutes after the result was announced, heavy rain fell for about 20 to 30 minutes, ending as abruptly as it had started. For many people, the downpour was a sign of God’s blessing and approval of the election outcome.

After the heavy rainfall, the streets of Yambio filled with supporters of Col. Bakosoro, including children running and singing in Arabic, “Baba ja, o’wuo, baba ja (Father has come).”

“I urge all of you to stay calm as you celebrate our victory. I am a governor of all the people of Western Equatoria; from Mvolo to Nagero counties and even those from other states in South Sudan living here. I will work with you to bring development,” Bakosoro said.

“No one will be treated as a foreigner as long as you are a Sudanese and abide by the culture of your host community,” Bakosoro reminded the jubilant residents.

In other areas, soldiers joined youths in drinking spots, where they poured beer on the streets and danced in praise of the new governor.

However, initially people were anxious due o the presence of SPLA soldiers in the streets of the town. They had a feeling that there would be chaos similar to those experienced in January just after the CPA celebrations held in the town.

The announcement of independent candidate Colonel Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro as winner of the hotly contested gubernatorial race in Western Equatoria State however was greeted with a mixture of joy and uneasiness in the capital Yambio and other state towns..

The deployment of SPLA troops within Yambio created fear amongst
The increased number of soldiers on the streets had caused some Yambio residents to flee the area before the result was announced by the NEC in Khartoum on 26 April. “The presence of soldiers … has scared us. As a result, we are sleeping in the bush,” said Gabriel Henry Bnaba.

Also, immediately following the results, market vendors closed down their stalls, some in fear of the increased military presence in town due to tension over the vote, and others in joy over the election results.

Twenty-one-year-old market vendor Paul Richard Gemenze said he was taken by surprise when most of his colleagues began closing down their stalls, as he had heard many false rumours that the results had been released. “But this (result) is from NEC (National Elections Commission) … tonight I will be in peace.”

The best example of election was that SPLM DC won four seats in South making them gets into South politics hence Parliament, they could have sense of celebrating four seats victory because they had voices in the South after election, DC got one seat in national assembly which is in Khartoum and other one in South Sudan assembly plus two remaining one are upper Nile state’s seats.
So can that not be enough evident that SPLM was not in control of election process?? If they did have over control, then in my own personal opinion, SPLM won’t let DC win even single point.
In yambio, streets were full by independent candidate, Joseph celebrators and were he an SPLM?

So, folks I guess we have to pour many blames onto election monitors and processors rather than bringing shameful accusation SPLM on to the people party, these accusation will not solve any problem, somewhat they filled burning fire with petrol.

We were looking for South succession, let put our focus on that issue and to see exactly who will be denying Southerners their right for separation, if we are turned in a scenario that is unacceptable, we could absolutely voiced our
