Sudan National Unity government to be dissolved, Bashir’s swearing in set for late May
May 3, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The government of National Unity (GoNU) formed in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) will be dissolved within the next few days, according to local media reports.
Sudan concluded the first multi-party elections since 1986 last month and a new government is to be formed accordingly in order to prepare the country for the 2011 self-determination referendum in South Sudan.
The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) led by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir won a landslide victory in North Sudan while the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) achieved similar result in the South.
GoNU consisted mainly of the NCP (52%) and SPLM (28%) and other smaller parties. However, the coalition was marked by tension between the former foes and dominance by the NCP in the decision making process within the government.
The independent Al-Sahafa daily said that new faces will join the government ranks which is due to be announced this month. Sources told the newspaper that individuals who played a pivotal role in the negotiations and execution of the CPA will enter the new government to give a thrust to work in the upcoming period which demands their skills.
The pro-government Al-Raed newspaper also reported that Bashir will be sworn in before the legislative bodies at the end of this month. Bashir won 68% of the votes in the elections marred by boycotts and logistical difficulties.
Bashir wanted to use an election win to help him defy the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, in which he is accused of ordering a campaign of murder, torture and rape in Sudan’s Darfur region.
