Sudanese army denies imminent rebel attack on El-Fasher

May 6, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese army denied rumors of imminent attack on the capital of North Darfur by the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) saying no any city is besieged in Darfur.

Despite the signing of a framework agreement and a truce in Doha on 23 February the Sudanese army and JEM rebels accused each other of attacks. Last week, the rebel group suspended its participation in the peace process to protest continual air and ground attacks on its positions.

Also growing rumors in the restive region said the rebels crashed the army in different position around El-Fashir and they were advancing towards the capital of North Darfur from different sides.

Due to the protests over investment fraud in El-Fasher where at least three people were killed last Sunday, the local authorities had decreed a curfew yesterday. But rumors said the curfew had been imposed as precautionary measure before the rebel attack on the town.

“We reaffirm that there is no besieged city in any state of Darfur,” said Alsoarmi Khaled spokesperson of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) today. He further accused JEM of attempting to deploy its troops in North and South Darfur.

Alsoarmi said the government allowed the return of JEM forces inside the country following the normalization with Chad. He mentioned that the rebel groups deployed its troops in Western Darfur and attempted to extend its presence to other positions in North and South Darfur.

He however warned that SAF are monitoring closing the movement of the rebels in the troubled region adding they would not allow them to attack “innocent civilians”.

JEM is now a toothless tiger trying to get in bed with NCP as wife #2 from Darfur. When the attacked Omdurman, that was the maxima of their strength. It was a downhill from there. It may attack El-Fashir but this is highly unlikely to produce any noticeable win. It is a good way to get the attention of the international community and say that this dying horse has some kicks to dish out.

As long as JEM continues to be used by Deby regime in Chad as a a proxy force, it will not achieve much. Being a client for another party is a sure way to lose the sight of why you rebelled in the first place. SPLA learned that the hard way when it became too dependent on Menghistu regime in Ethiopia. when that was gone, SPLA nearly collapsed in early 1990s before rediscovering why South rebelled in the first place. JEM is undergoing the same learning process.
