US condemns Darfur attacks urges resumption of talks

May 18, 2010 (WASHINGTON) — US State Department has condemned today recent military escalations between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and urged the party to resume peace talks.

destroyed_Seraf_village.jpgThe Sudanese army and the rebel JEM traded accusations of breaching a cessation of hostilities agreement inked in Doha on 23 February as part of a framework deal to end the seven years in Darfur.

The capture of Jebel Moon, a rebel stronghold area and the killing of 108 rebels last week besides other bloody clashes in North and South Darfur were seen as serious threat to the peace process in Doha.

“The United States condemns the recent offensive actions in Darfur, particularly the Government of Sudan’s use of aerial bombings and local militias against Darfur rebel positions in the Jebel Moon area of West Darfur,” said Philip J. Crowley, State Department spokesperson on Tuesday.

“Subsequent incidents of looting and attacks on infrastructure by the Justice and Equality Movement further endanger civilian populations and must immediately cease,” he added.

Washington had turned a blind eye to government attacks on rebel positions in Jebel Marra which forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes and move to the poor IDPs camps in the region during since last summer to February of this year.

Also, since March the US administration kept silence on the clashes between JEM rebels and Sudanese army. The general elections and southern Sudan government seemed to be the only concern of Washington.

Besides activists call for tough action against Khartoum and criticism to Obama’s special envoy to Sudan, the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said earlier this month that she was not satisfied with the role played by the US in Sudan but described the situation in the country as “explosive” and “complicated”.

Crowley appealed the two parties to refrain from further actions and urged them to return to “active negotiations in the AU/UN-mediated peace process in Doha, Qatar, to reach a political settlement to the conflict in Darfur”.

The weak support of the US administration to Darfur political process has negatively impacted the progress of the talks in Doha. JEM rebels accused last week US envoy to Sudan of working with the African Union officials to destabilize Darfur mediation and to abate it.

State Department spokesperson also called on the Sudanese government to grant access to the affected areas to the hybrid peacekeeping mission and aid groups working in Darfur.

The UNAMID announced yesterday it would conduct a verification mission and escort humanitarian assessment team to the Jebel Moon.
