South Sudan parliament re-elects Igga as Speaker of the House

May 20, 2010 (JUBA) — James Wani Igga was yesterday re-elected Speaker of the recently elected Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA), at a ceremony presided over by Dr. Riek Machar, the Government of South Sudan Vice-President designate.

Igga who is from Central Equatoria has been the Speaker of the House since the formation of government in 2005.

“My victory in this assembly is a true manifestation of how much hope and trust members of Parliament have in me as their Speaker. I will continue serving them as I did in my previous term,” an excited Wani Igga said after taking oath.

He is deputized by Daniel Awet Akot of Lakes state while the Controller of the Assembly, a newly created third position, is taken by Peter Bashir Bhandi of Western Equatoria state. Igga and his deputy were both sworn in on Thursday in the Assembly.

The three elected leaders of parliament are all from the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). Igga and Akot are members of the SPLM Political Bureau; the highest political organ of the party. Akot was the former governor of Lakes state but did not secure the nomination of the gubernatorial position from the Political Bureau.

The one-day event also witnessed the swearing-in of the newly-elected members of the August, which is mainly dominate by members from the ruling Sudanese Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM).

SPLM won a landslide victory in the recent parliamentary, gubernatorial and presidential elections in Southern Sudan. It has moved steadily up from the 70% representation in accordance with the power sharing of the 2005 peace deal to 95% representation following the elections victory.

Earlier on, the nomination of a member of the SPLM-DC, the break-away faction of the SPLM caused a stir, with majority of the legislators expressing doubt on his possibility of winning.

The SPLM-DC has less than five members in the August House consisting of over 90 percent of SPLM members.

The President of southern Sudan Government is scheduled to be sworn in on Friday, 21st May. His running mate and Vice President-designate, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, is also expected to be sworn in soon after Salva Kiir takes oath of office.

The two leaders are expected to consult and form the next cabinet in the semi-independent region, pending the referendum on independence which is scheduled to take place eight months from now.

Congratulations to Mr. James Wani Igga again. This is a good work by the assembly. No one is worth than Igga to be the speaker of the SSLA.

My Appeal is that the parliament this time should be very vigilant on the corrupt leaders and rightfully identified themselves as law makers and should not collabrate with the thieves in the governemnt.

Wishing you a happy 2010 and fair disccusion the parliament.

James Wani Igga has demonstrated excellent leadership and wisdom. The South is reaping the rewards of his excellent service and dedication.

I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for him. He is a shining example for how true leadership and service for the people should be.

I hope he will continue to stir the South towards the rule of law, where no one would feel slighted or think that they are above the law for that matter.

Congretulations Mr. Wani Igga, Daniel Awet Akot and Peter Bashiri,

The ball is now on your side it will be upto you to control it to the expectations of all the Southern Sudanese. I know the job is to be tedious but you have to do it for there is no simple liberation. You offer to liberate the Southerners and that was accepted that why the three of you were elected there!

Shine on, shine and remember to start telling the Southerners about their upcoming referendum, it is too near and every body must be told what the Countyr Sudan will like after either seperation of the bleak unity.

    Be bless,

Deng Akol Agut-tungduon, a man far away from tribalism and corruption.
