June 3, 2010 (TURALEI) — Northern Bahr el Ghazal authorities have on Thursday called for more sport activities in the area, saying that the involvement of youth in sports activities in the area will help keep them occupied and away from tribal conflicts.

Robert Majok Kuol, a local youth activist and a football fan told Sudan Tribune from Aweil town that the state has already formed a strong and shining team selected from different teams and is prepared to play with any other national team at their request.

“We have formed a strong team called Aweil star. It is a selection of different team members with strong sporting skills. They have played successful internal matches are still being coached so that these young people can grow up properly,” he said.

It was a wonderful event attended by almost all top senior state officials and we are planning to play with another local team called Mariek this coming Friday, he said adding that he is hoping to beat this team.

Majok also thanked the state administration for helping the new team with sports materials. He stated that General Paul Malong Awan Anei, Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state showed interest in sport and other youth related activities in the area.

He added that ” it was his personal assistance and involvement that helped our team performed satisfactorily to beat western Bahr el Ghazal team at the fifth CPA anniversary held in Yambio town, capital of western Equatoria state, on 19 January this year.”

Aweil star is the only team in the state to have received such a gift because of their performance.

Speaking as a government official, he said that he hopes the government will do its best to develop youth who have shown interest in sporting activities as their careers.

They will be open fully-equipped training camps , he said.
