Sudan’s partial re-run elections to begin tomorrow

June 4, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese National Elections Commission (NEC) announced today that preparations are complete for the elections re-run that will take place in 33 national and state electoral constituencies across the country that will last for two days.

Abdullah Bella Al-Hardlo who is one of NEC members was quoted by state media as saying that the re-run will take place in Khartoum, West Darfur, North Darfur, Red Sea, North Kordofan, Port Sudan, Upper Nile, Gadaref, Sennar, Kassala and Jonglei among others.

Elections were cancelled in these constituencies for various reasons such as errors in the ballot papers or symbols assigned to the candidates.

Sudan conducted its first presidential, legislative and gubernatorial elections in 24 years last April that were marred by opposition boycott and allegations of fraud and procedural mistakes.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) won a comfortable majority in the North and South respectively.

The poll, agreed under a 2005 peace deal that ended more than two decades of north-south civil war, was supposed to help bring the oil-producing state back to democracy after 21 years of rule by a military-led coup.

Elections in Southern Kordofan State would take place next November after receipt of the new census results, while the elections of Gezira State legislative council would take place next October.
