Sudan’s Bashir says unity of country is in best interest of North & South

June 5, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir has warned that a new state in the south could ignite a series of problems as it happened in similar situations worldwide.

Per the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), Sudan’s oil-producing south has been promised a referendum in early 2011 on whether to separate and become an independent country or remain united with the north. It is widely expected that Southerners, who lived through more than two decades of bitter civil war that killed millions, will choose secession.

“Parts of the border could be explosive… like in the case of Ethiopia and Eritrea, or even India and Pakistan,” Bashir said during a meeting of his ruling National Congress party (NCP).

Al-Bashir stressed that national unity serves the interests of all the Sudanese people in the north and the south, calling for a campaign with the participation of all to make unity attractive

The NCP said that its main objective after winning the elections is to focus on making unity attractive in the coming months even though most analysts believe this step is well belated. Opposition figures blame the NCP presence in power for making independence more attractive.

The SPLM has rejected a proposal reportedly raised by Eritrea and South Africa to delay the referendum or a ten-year interim period as put forward by the Egyptians.

“We have no other choice but to work with the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) for the sake of the country’s unity,” Bashir said.

The SPLM and NCP have yet to agree on many post-referendum items including the border demarcation, national debt and sharing of oil wealth.

Bashir said the SPLM would get 30% of the upcoming government with the same ministers they had before the polls, with the exception of the Foreign Ministry. He said the SPLM complained they did not get enough oil revenues, supposed to be split roughly 50:50 under a 2005 peace deal, so he had given them that portfolio.

“The [SPLM] in the new government shall take the Energy Ministry so they can be sure they are getting their share of the petrol,” he said.

Most of the oil lies in the South but the SPLM promised to continue sharing revenue with the North even in the event of an independence.

Actually Mr. criminal Albashir, the unity of country is in best interest of North. Southerners have been the victims since the so-called Sudan independent. We will be better off as a seperate nations.

    To Bashier,

Why do you think unity of the country is the best interest of North and South while we have been living in the Sudan for decades. Where are hospitals, schools, roads, clinics, government buildings, rail roads, and equal ministry in the government? Why not you guys provide the above to the South if you know that Sudan is the country for all Sudanese.?

The only message to South Sudanese is not to listen to any bias from the North because they does not know how to build the nation. The North are greedy and selfish because they thought that the South Sudanese were not knowing what they were doing for centuries. Let finish the work of Dr John Garang so that we can create new atmosphere in the South because we are very exausted under the Sudan rule. Seperation will be the best choice of South Sudanese.

Yes, SPLM/A should be very keen on the following issues: border demarcation, national debt and sharing of oil wealth. Frankly, the South has nothing to do with national debt. We don,t know how Bashier spent it and when. Our debt is widely known that the NCP has spent lots of money for weapons against the South from China, Iran, Iraq, and many middle East countries. How come NCP/Bashier talk of national debt?

I and some of my South Sudanese are fed up with Arab North because we want democracy under the South leadehsip.
    Thanks

It is becoming clear that that President Al-Bashir and his NCP party are determined to buy South Sudan independence and freedom, using the SPLM/A sell-out leaders!

God have mercy on the Souls of Separatist Southerners who died in vain unde the deception of SPLM/A war.

    Dr Okuk,

We South Sudanese can not benefit from your usual comments. I don,t really know why you waste your spare time writing on the net if you know that SPLM/A is not your party. You better promote your SPLM-Dc so that it will be your future party in Sudan. Thanks

As hard as it may be, I would agree with President Al-Bashir on maintaining Sudan’s unity. However, normal unity is not going to work. Only a managed confederation would be the only viable option for saving the unity. South would enjoy powers almost reserved for an independent state but both parts of Sudan will remain geographically intact and maintain common defense.

South must be prepared to not hesitate to go back to war as soon as the referendum results are announced. Obviously, vast majority of Southerners would choose secession over unity. North will then annex some parts of South that are currently along the contentious border areas and plunge the new country into war and poverty like Ethiopia did to Eritrea. The only difference however is that Southern leadership is more democratic than Eritrea’s but that is another story.

So southerners, Bashir has issued an implicit warning that there is surely going to be a war along North-South borders.

Bashir must be mad. He knows what he has done in the South and now he is saying that the unity of Sudan is for the interest of both the north and the south. The south has no interest in that unity. That so-called unite Sudan has humiliated the south for half a century. So please do not waste your time and the money you have already stolen. We are done with you. Ok.

Soon after the South Sudan become another nation, the North will be an Arab nation. The Northern Sudanese are free to have their sharia law, islamic rules, and anything that they want to be make their country to be an Arab nation after we South Sudanese left. Just go and hire your Dr Lam Akol to be your foreign minister to cover your Arab country or you you guys but not in the Goss.

    Dear Southerners,

It is true that most Southerners are unaware of what secession means! Most of those who write on this website are separatists for one reason or another. It is a pity thing that most of them are either blindly following a scenarist TRIBAL SHARK or just ignorant of the REAL consequences or secession. It seems that the whole separatists stand is based on paranoia, ignorance and fantasies. No deep analysis of the reasons behind the bitterness and backwardness of the South. Continuous Wars and mistrust are the main reasons. Both Northerners and Southerners are responsible for this tragedy, although the Northerners have the lion’s share. But still past mistakes are not good enough for separation.

The CPA is a historic chance to solve the problems and heal the wounds. However, SPLM and NCP were in continuous dispute on how to implement the Agreement and doing so little to develop the South. The National Government has been trying to implement some projects, but the GoSS wasted Billions of Dollars and build nothing but tyranny, corruption, unrest, tribalism, slaughtering of democracy and possessing fat personal bank accounts. It is too late for the GoSS to attract international support – not from EU or the USA. Humanitarian aids are not enough to erect a new state.

A new South state is not easy to realize. What are the pillars we have to build a new state? Nothing! It is better to sincerely list all the negative impacts of separation on the Southerners rather than just say “We will be better off as a separate nation”, or “It is Too late”, or “The North is greedy and selfish”. We must recall Dr John Garang‘s basic idea to create a new atmosphere in the Sudan. He never propagated a separate state in the South, because he knew that it is not possible at all (look into the trillion problems the South is suffering and the new wide-spectrum problems that will haunt the simple poor population after referendum and “unwise” secession).

Let us benefit from the CPA. It has given Southerners a good start (full power in the South and 30% in the North, in addition to the natural resources in the South and the share of the oil to build our motherland and our humans. If we failed to take an advantage of the provisions of the CPA, we will never be able (as Southerners) to agree on or realize even 10% of what it provides if we have a separate state. Tribalism, corruption, selfishness, taking of tribes land rights and livestock by iron and fire, unfair competition on power are disasters we are faced by, to mention few. The neighboring countries are just waiting for the chance to exploit the South, like a hyenas waiting for leopard kill to steal. They have already started to feed on our flesh and suck our blood. They cannot offer the South anything that the CPA wont guarantee.

Those who support separation should be careful that they are risking the well-being and the very existence of their own people. There are questions the separatists cannot answer. Please as a sincere reader think carefully and come up with these questions. There are out there. Only the blind cannot see them. We can live in peace and work hard for the rights and development of our people under the CPA and under whatever future agreements. Let us do that for some time and latter decide if it works or not.

Separation is really a disaster to the Southerners and to all Sudanese. Unity is the most reasonable and rational choice, if both South and North work together. Time has come to shed bitterness and bad feelings and work sincerely for a better Sudan. We have not exploited all the peaceful possibilities and opportunities before hands to propagate for separation. Separatists must shut up, because they are not able to do anything for our people but more sufferings, killings and backwardness. Sudan is near, more than ever, to solve the problems of all the marginalized people in the South, North, West , Central and East of the country. We’re on the right track to correct historical blunder. We need time. We just need patience, hard-work and good governance.

Please think many times before casting your vote during the referendum. Do not be influenced by others, especially the separatists and tribal LORDS. The educated should enlighten their poor and uneducated voters. Tell them what it means to have a separate state – A NIGHTMARE, WARS, MORE STARVATION, MORE DISEASE, MORE THIRSTY, MORE COW AND LAND THEFT. etc.

Remember that SPLM is now in control of all the South because of CPA – not because of war. Remember that the relative peace, power and resources we have are due to negotiation and good wisdom – not because of war. Remember that the late Dr, Garang was fighting for just, equity and prosperous of all Sudanese people.

Southerners know full well where their interest lie and you are not the one to tell them after killing them.
Furthermore what did the African Sudanese gained from this what so -called independent and united Sudan in the last fifty years? The answer is simple, death, displacement, genocide, underdevelopment, and expolitation, wrong type of education and mounting road blocks to them in every direction they turn to in life.

    Poor Bashir

Yes unity would be the best for Sudan but you have DONE NOTHING (even not enough to provide power in Juba) for South Sudan during CPA
Yes unity is the only solution for Sudan but if you were really thinking of Sudan future, you would have resigned long time ago and let someone who has not done crime during war, at the head of the State…but you have done nothing, nothing, nothing and you stayed as President

South Sudan will become independent and it will be again a disaster both for North and SOuth, but this is your fault criminal Bashir (and corrupted SPLM guys)

Kiir,Pagan, and Yasir are timing you to declare unilateral independence in 2011, if the referendum for the south to decide its stand to Continue under Arab slavery in hole country or enjoy independent digity in Africa with out Islamic sharia law fails..
